Sorry Ship, I thought people would have loads of feedback - although looking at one of Shilasdair's posts in NL perhaps Pessoas are not 'acceptable' any more

i like pessoas use them on all my young horses as do many people i kno, i do think if you can get someone to come and give u a lesson with your horse and the pessoa u will get the full benefit, some horses take longer to get use to the whole system than others but if u have lunged with 2 lunge lines(one round the butt) ur horse will get use to that sort of feel without being in the complication of the pessoa itself!! i only ever use em long and low n the horses seem happy and relaxed in that possition!! hope that helps a bit

I tried a John Whitaker version on my horse, kindly lent for a trial run by the very generous Emma_C on here.

I would suggest that the first time you put it on that you get ready in the school, I would get someone to hold your horse, as s/he may take a dislike to feeling the piece that goes round his/her hind legs.

My horse is pretty laid back and was fine, til something spooked him and then he realised he had the piece around his hind legs and he thought he had been "caught". He soon settled down but I think its best you get ready and disrobe your horse in teh school til he has got used to the feeling.

Only cos its preferable to your horse panicking itself in a nonsafe environment.

Some horses get used to it right away and others take longer.

My horse transformed after just using it for one session, he never works long and low but this was amazing!

I think its best not to use for longer than 20mins and be sure to warm up and warm down correctly and if in doubt have the lines loose to begin with so the horse stretches down of his own accord and is not forced into a shape........

Good luck!

It really makes Donkey use her backend - well the Pessoa and me running around behind her flapping the schooling whip like some crazy person

Thanks was thinking 20 mins would be my max so will do 5 mins on each rein for the first few times and get some helpers will be buying chockies I think
