Using stable mats for a field gateway

I had really bad problems last winter with my field gateway. This was caused by my pony being a fence walker and with the rain and snow. I have now moved into another stable on the block that already has stable mats down and so I was wondering if I could use my original mats in the field and give him somewhere to stand. What I would like to do is section of a stable sized space for the mats and so saving the rest of my field if I need to. This way hes outside and not in his stable and away from the other horses. Does anyone have any experiance with stable mats outside or should i be looking to purchase the mats with holes in. It seems silly if I can utilise the mats I already have.

They're going to get awfully slippery with wet mud on them. I have a couple around the water trough, but I'd be more worried with a gateway that the horse is more likely to come up to the gate at speed, or be pratting around.
 
yes they will be ok i bought some old cow mats of the internet they are fine if I had the money I would have the ones with holes in .
 
Thanks, i was thinking that they might sink into the ground so have come up with the idea of laying some carpet underneath to stop them sinking (also mean if it doesnt work i can remove them easily without digging them up) and laying the mats the wrong way round so the little bobbly bits underneath will offer more grip. Only problem i see with that is they may move on the carpet so will need pinning down in place.

But not thought about the wet mud on top, thats something to think about.
