Hi just wanted to consult H&H worldly wisdom as have been offered some wood chips would they make a good surface or are they likely to just turn into a slippy mess? Has anyone used them successfully/unsuccessfully?

Plum crumble or choc-chip cookies on offer,

cheers!

Wood chips (especially if they are softwood) rot down fairly quickly when they get wet, and turn into compost! If they are hardwood they might last a little longer but if you can get then, bark chips last longest of all. They might last better if you put drainage, such as a stone base, but my manege was stone then Cushionride (wood) and it is rotting after about 8 years. Straight on the ground they may move around and cause slips.
Why don't you just spray off all the vegetation and leave a soil surface? Depending on how well drained it is, but then if it isn't, your wood chips will just get soggier and soggier anyway.
Plum crumble would be nice :) :)

Slippery mess unless they are laid onto a well prepared, drained area and even then they will not stand up to constant use, you would be better just draining and using stone.

I have plum crumble made last night but a cookie would be good.

Our soil is very sandy so they shouldn't get super wet, maybe bark chippings would work... Otherwise sounds like better to leave as it is until have the budget for stone.

Thanks

on eBay they are selling something really Wierd. It's astro turf that you put down in three layers and cover with rubber clippings, meant for stopping muddy gateways. Might be worth a look or a giggle at, not sure .....
