The pikie pony has got a rather sunburnt nose and lips. She looks like she's been sniffing glue!! I can't find a mask that covers her entire nose and lips anywhere. Does anyone know where to get one?

She is covered in Factor 50 water resistant sunblock and there isn't any point in keeping her in because the sun shines straight into her stable and she always has her head out keeping an eye on proceedings. I don't really want to have to shut her in with the top door shut all day so think a mask is the only way forward!!

I've found Shires ones quite good. -

Cashel are good too, but more expensive.

The only problem being that the sunburn is all over her nose, nostrils and bottom lip down the sides so need it to cover them. The ones above don't.

Mine are big enough to cover whole of nose and most of the sides. My mare only goes out at night and is in during the heat of the day. If these mask don't cover enough, perhaps you should try shading the front of your stable, or guess you will just have to continue slapping on sunscreen on the bit that aren't covered.

The Equilibrium Fly mask is very good, it coveres the whole face and the sizing is quite large, it usually hangs over the nose, I used them on my two last year. They're about £29.99 each. Google it, but I think Derby House, Robinsons sell them.

Cashel crusader - one with ears and long nose. My gypsy cob and clydesdale have them and it keeps their large pink noses in perfect kissable smoothness.

They have UV protection and my chaps wear them 24 x 7 all summer and to date have no rubs and very rarely do they come off.

In my opinion best you can get, Chancer's is on its third year and Cairo's on its fourth.

The crusader is great and I no longer have to put factor 50 on the muzzle area.

The Cashel crusader mask is made of much thicker mesh than the Equilibrium which is more light netting. I've used the Equilibrium one in the past, and loved them until I discovered the Crusader which I believe provides far better sun protection for pinky noses.

I gather that your problem is extreme so I doubt if there's anything on the market that would be any better. Perhaps you could sew/velcro on an extension net/mesh around the edge of the nose cover. Also you'll probably have to continue factor 50'ing.

The Aerborn one is great and very high quality but the nose bit isn't long enough for my mare who also suffers terrible sunburn right round her muzzle, made worse by the fact that she has acute ragwort poisoning. I made one by snipping the sleeve off my OH white office shirt and using the top part to make a little tube that I sewed onto a fieldsafe headcollar. You snip the bottom of the tube into strips to make grazing easier. Also, I've been given the e-bay address of a lady who makes exactly these masks for sunburn rather than fly control but I can't get into my e-bayl account. Will find the link and copy in a mo x

I bought the cheap ones from Decathlon and sewed extra fabric on to it, as I have an appaloosa x connemara with completely pink skin who burns badly if not protected. I think the only thing you can do is modify the masks to suit your own horse, to protect his nose/lips etc.

i know you posted this a while ago but if you havent already splashed out...i swear by my Equilibrum Full face, my mare has an extremely pink nose this has 80% uv protection and means i only end up putting sun cream on the sides of her lips
