Hi

My Horse has just been diagnosed with Uveitis yesterday, more tests & discussions with the vet next week & possible Opthamologist trip to determine how advanced however have been advised he will lose vision at some point whenever this maybe.

So Im busy googling away to research into it all but has anyone got any tips, handy hints, much needed purchases to ensure my boy continues his content and happy life!

I have been through this twice, first time not a lot know about it poor mare suffered nearly lost 98% of vision.



My advice is watch for the symptoms catch it early with the atropine do reduce damage to eye and reduce spasms.

Keep out of bright light, cashel hood in stable and out but guardian mask when turned out.

The best thing as mentioned is to catch it get vet to leave you and show you how to do this. With my mare I knew when an attack was happening as she started to shake her head like a fly buzzing round, so she lost very very very little vision about 2 % pm me any time

Thank you - are the symptoms different in horses? Mine was headshaking last Wednesday when ridden or tried to be ridden, thought he was being silly spooking at something tbh as never headshaked before but then sunday, hence vet visit tuesday - so im thinking now thats probably his signs & worried now left it late from last wed.
Vet said he will show me next week tests to do on Alfie to see any signs of changes, presume for any oncoming bouts of it.
Ive just ordered him an equilibrium field mask, has 80% uv ray protection - is this good enough?
and in his stable? i need something there as well?
Read somewhere in the millions of websites i looked at last night that there is a Global Herbs to help as well?

yes the important thing is to catch it quick. Sounds like his warning was like my mare. Atropine is the first one you use as it dilates the pupil while its in spasm .

The Guardian mask is another thing

I would also ride him in a mask too, dirt bright light can trigger as can wind http://www.guardianmask.com/

Diamonds uveitis actually vanished once the laminitis started , sadly I wish i could have swapped them round:(:(:(
 
If you buy an gaurdian mask, allow lots of time for it to arrive from the states.

Mine was made to measure because the cob has a head like a bucket, and it took forever to arrive.
 
I think it depends on why she has/had uveitis, was it a one off knock/blow to the head/eye which caused it? Or did it just happen, which if so is more likely to be recurrent.
My horse had a blow to the head before I bought him which lead to uveitis however hasnt had a flare up since. I also use the equilibrium and Premier equine masks in the summer. His eye does run in the wind but control this with an artifical tear ( I work in Optics so very handy for drugs)
Look out for light sensitivity, lashes facing downwards, red painful eye. These are all symptoms and if noticed phone vet and put horse in a darken stable.
 
My 36 yr old had his eye taken out last year due to reoccurring Uveitis. He had it for about 3 years, started off by getting a twig in his eye and went from there. He also had Kerititis (i think thats how you spell it) which resulted from the Uveitis. It was a nightmare, i couldnt turn him out on sunny days, had to be overnight in the summer. Even on bright winter days hurt his eye. The reason i got his eye taken out as the uveitis ended up not going away with treatment and it has been the best thing ive done for him. He used to be unhappy, wouldnt put his head over the stable door. I used a Equilibrium mask which was great for him if it is only mild Uveitis. I also fed him Eyebright from Feedmark which helped him a little. Good luck its awful to deal with!!
 
Hi thanks guys

Alfie had a blow to the head/eye last Saturday, noseying whilst whizzing round the lunge pen! so hopefully then it's a one off, however don't know his history as only had him a couple of months. The vet coming back next week after his treatment to look further as was too inflamed Tuesday see a lot in the back of the eye & discuss it more with me.
His mask didn't go to plan today, his mates apparently must have thought it a great game & it ended up on the sand paddock floor ha!
