Uvitis

Hi everyone. Has anyone on here got a horse who suffers from Uvitis? The reason i ask my horse has a swollen red eye every two and a half months. He has had it since i have owned him 3 years. I have had the vet out three times had dye in nothing, tear ducts flushed. I was given drops which i put in the next day its back to normal. He does not seem in pain not affected by light. Most of the time its cleared up by the time the vet arrives. He says its an infection nothing to worry about. I always complete the treatment but it still returns.

Has he had a firm diagnosis of uveitis hun? There's a big difference between an eye infection such as conjunctivitis, and uveitis. Most simple eye infections affect the OUTSIDE of the eye but uveitis affects the INTERNAL structure of the eye. Did your vet use an opthalmoscope to look into your ned's eye? If so, did s/he say there were no signs of uveitis? The drops you were given may have been simple antibiotics for an external problem such as a scratch on the cornea, conjunctivitis, etc or you may have been given atropine drops that keep the iris dilated so that adhesions don't form inside the eye that would distort the iris. A red swollen eye is not happy news and a red swollen eye that has recurred every 10 weeks for 3 years is definitely not happy news, although the very fact that your ned still has 2 eyes is a plus. If it was me, I'd ask your vet for an immediate referral to a specialist horse hospital and have a full investigation done.

Yes, the vet did give him a good examination, he did say that he didn't think it was uvitis.
Thanks for your reply, problem is I am off on holiday today for a week but as soon as I come back and he has his next flare up, I will get the vet out to get him referred. I'll let you know how it goes on.

Have a happy holiday bhw. Not sure where in the UK you are but I took Sunny to Bushy Equine Clinic in Dursley, Gloc. They have a superb eye specialst (too late at night to spell opthalmologist) on the staff and they pulled all the stops out to try to save Sunny's eye. They were marvellous and even now, 3 years later, they are still happy for my local equine vets to ring them for guidance re Sunny's remaining eye.

I wonder if she's sitting on a beach getting more sun than we are? At least it's dry here today.
