Anyone else got experience w horse becoming extremely nappy when fresh (out on hacks). Pony has always been one to try it on when he can and with it being so wet he’s been in a lot recently (more than every before). Hacked him today and He was super fresh but napping like never before... I kept him moving as much as I could but when I had to stop for traffic etc there was nothing I could do to make him move. He’s always napped a tiny bit nothing a smack on the bum couldn’t sort but today there was no way that pony was moving (thank fully I managed to persevere so he didn’t get the better of me for next time).
Should I be worried there may be something wrong? Ulcers etc or just put it down to him being a tw*t? He seemed full of the joys of life when we turned home- speed walking, not a sign of any issue, which to me implies he’s fine?!
Thanks:)

Probably no help but my big 17.1 wb napped. I read of a British showjumpercthat would take a book out when riding a napper. If it stopped he did nothing, got his book out!! Horse was only allowed to move in the direction he wanted to ride, so one time when my horse but the anchors on I did the same, minus the book! Just sat, did nothing, said nothing. After about 20 mins the horse walked on and he never napped again!!

That’s such a good idea- maybe I can use the time to get some emails done?? I tried something similar earlier but wasn’t convinced it would actually work so gave up but now you have said that it’s not as silly as it seems so I think I’ll give it a go next time!!!

One of ours starting napping when his saddle started hurting. New saddle = no more napping (he had changed shape). Might be worth getting saddle checked if not done so recently.
