Decided to go out for a nice hack this a'noon as we had a bit of sunshine between the showers, but it turned out to be a pretty scary experience

I was walking along the usually quiet road between 2 of the bridleways when George and I heard a commotion round the bend and then coming towards us were 20 odd horses and traps, with the people shouting and waving sticks and the ponies trotting and cantering with some of the carts 2 abreast

George span round and started jigging about in the road but didn't try to hare off thank god. I got him facing the right way and tried to say calming things as they all shot past, shouting and laughing at me, and George just stood there shaking from head to foot

As soon as they went past I quickly got George moving ready to turn onto the bridlepath when I heard some of the lads yell 'lets go in the woods' and they spun their horse and carts round in the road and came up behind us

George nearly sat on one in his fear, but he kept moving and we got onto the bridlepath and thank goodness the traps went the other way.

I then stopped George and he stood quietly whilst we made sure they'd all gone, and we then turned around and he took me back to the yard quickly but calmly

bless his heart.

I was shaking when I got back, and I dread to think what would of happened if I had gone down the bridlepath they went down and I'd met them in the woods

Oh my goodness, what a good boy he was! How ae YOU feeling now? I'd have been absolutely terrified-and walking home horse-less I think.

Bloody idiots

What horrible people - surely if they're horsey people themselves they should understand how dangerous it is to frighten a horse on the roads?

Your boy sounds like he deserves lots of cuddles and carrots for being a brave boy!

Awwww poor you and George! These people sound like travellers!!!! We have them race all the time around by our yard and it is a truely terrifying experience for the horse and rider!!!

I try not to go out on the roads any more as they go racing like this quite often and the last time my horse got scared and went backwards into a ditch! Such a shame as she is traffic proof but these people are just idiots and have absoultey no respect for horse or rider and they appear to enjoy other peoples misfortunes!

Hope you get over your awful experience

For george to look after you, and for him to trust you in that scary situation shows what a good boy you've got, and what a great bond you have with each other.
Wine and carrots all round i think.

Well done George for keeping so calm and you for keeping your cool!!! I think I would have had a heart-attack! These people, whoever they are, sound like real s***s.

You always knew George was a bit of a superstar didn't you, but my goodness, he has proved it today. What a brave boy and well done you for not panicking, I'm sure you staying calm helped him to keep his nerve. Easier said that done though, to stay cool when you're fearing the worst so huge respect to you and George for coping with a really stressful experience. You two have the most special relationship, it's always lovely to read your posts because whatever happens, that always shines through.

Oh - poor you and poor George too - that must have been absolutely terrifying.

I know George is a superstar, but not to bolt off in sheer terror shows just how amazing he is, and how much trust he also has in you, as you obviously managed to stay calm and reassure him, while it was all happening, even if you did feel like a jelly when you got back!

Luckily it was just a very unpleasant one off experience - and you and George can be very proud of each other for handling it so well, and it will give you even more confidence knowing you can handle anything in the future.

Well done - I am shaking on your behalf!

Oh my goodness.... well done George for looking after you & you for staying calm.
I hate to think what would've happened had I been on Balou (4yo on box rest)
I'll put money on it being the travellers that have moved into that field in Blackmore

I've only ever had it happen to me once before & there were only 2 of them. The problem, as someone else said, is they think it's really funny to see you having problems

Glad you're both ok. Carrots for George & a large glass of vino for you.

Thanks everyone, to be honest it all happened so quickly I didn't have chance to panic. I am pretty nervous and lacking in confidence at the best of times so it was a miracle I didn't have a heart attack. I really didn't know what to do, stand still, turn round, scream! Standing still seemed the safest thing and then getting out of the way as quickly as I could - eek!

How scary for you. Frigging idiots

I suppose the positive you can take from it is that he obviously trusts you implicitly, you remained calm and handled the situation well.

Carrots and wine allround!
