Vaccinate yes or no

Our mare is now 13yrs and for the last three years not competed due to an injury and will never compete again so she is now a much loved field companion. Her annual vacs are due and have always continued with them in the past however wondering if it is totally necessary now.
What do others do when they do not leave the premises.
 
At the very least you should have her vaccinated for tetanus. Its a horrible thing to happen to them, and can be prevented. There is a vaccine that only needs boosting every 3years i think?
 
Yes.. vaccinate for both.. because if you dont, and the mare comes down with one of the vaccinationable (i made that word up..?) disease, you are not insured.

Absoultely vaccinate for tetanus if nothing else. It's a horrid, painful disease that is entirely preventable. As long as she is still up to date with her vaccs (which you said she is) she'll only need a tetanus booster every 2 years. Personally i'd carry on with flu too but there are lots of coming and goings on our yard so i'd prefer to be safe but if it's a relativley quiet yard with very few horses coming and going then maybe not. As Nailed said though, if she does come down with 'flu or anything related then insurance won't pay out as it was preventable by vaccine.
 
If she is unlikely to be in contact with strange horses then vaccinate for tetanus only. The equine flu vaccine can cause a nasty reaction, espcially in older horses (though your mare isn't quite in that category yet!)
 
DEFINATLEY vaccinate for tetanus. She can contract this from the soil by getting the tinniest cut. They need bosters for tetnus yearly. Do you have any horses coming onto the property (shows, livery etc)? If you do and it is possible she makes contact with them vaccinate for strangles as well as this is super contagious
 
totally agree with everyone re tetanus its the worst thing to see and to think it could of been prevented for a few quid!! if your on good terms with your vet he may even give you the jab to do yourself as you prob dont need it stamped although i am sure this is v v naughty but may save you a few quid in call out !! as for flu ummm not sure but as long as everything else that goes out and about is vaccinated against it you should be ok and as far as i know tetanus is 2 years so a small price to pay really!
