Horses vaccinated.
My dog was always vaccinated.
Cats not vaccinated, but they're the feral yard cats we rehomed....I'm not having my hands clawed off trying catch them ;)

4 horses all routinely done, Dog been done all his life as have my previous dogs, but he is ill at the moment, waiting to be vaccinated when he's better!!!!!

3 horses Denny is fully vaccinated. the old mare and baby Lottie only for tetnus.
My old dalmation lived till he was nearly 17yrs and only had his jabs till 1 yr and was never sick or sorry, same with younger dog Kenwood who is 13yrs and fighting fit ( in fact he has never been to the vets in the last 10 yrs!!)

Thanks everyone!

Only ask as it came up in conversation last night, and it seems everyone has different views on it! We've always had our horses done, but never dogs and cats; however I'm now thinking of getting my new cat vaccinated as she'll be in an area with lots of others around. Our rabbits are vaccinated because there are lots of wild bunnies and badgers that come into the garden!

Thanks for the replies :)

Horses - the lot, else we can't show them
Dogs - the lot, else they can't go to kennels
Cats - nothing.

If I could get away with not vaccinating anything, I would. I believe over-vaccinating is cruel, criminal, a waste of money and dangerous for the animals health.

Dorey will be restarting her vaccination programme for the 3rd or 4th time in 7 years due to lapsing. You seriously telling me that after being pumped full of these vaccines she's suddenly going to drop dead of tetanus after a day?

It's a scam, one huge scam which causes the animals harm (studies are starting to show repeatided vaccines in the same place can cause cancer, apparently!!) and if I could not be a part of it, I would!

Horses vaccinated against Tetanus only (as they are 2 x oldies & 1 pet that never go off the yard)
Dogs - vaccinated for first 3 years and then not as never go off the farm. One dog vaccinated once and had bad reaction so never done again on vet's advice. He is now 16 and still going strong.
Cats - vaccinated for first couple of years and then not as never go off farm. One is 18 and the other is 22!

Horses & Dogs are all vaccinated.

Cats are not Vaccinated, there both house cats & 1 has a terrible reaction to the vaccine's. I had her vaccinated twice & on both occasions she ended up seriously ill the later time she ended up being admited to the vets. So no more for her & the insurance are informed & are happy.

All mine are vaccinated - 2 dogs and a cat but the cat wouldn't be if he wasn't going into the cattery this year (he's 7 and has never needed to go to vets - except for neutering)

My normally very nice vet said I was stupid for not having cat vaccinated until he was 7 as he could get various life threatening cat diseases through my negligence. surprised he has lived this long

All horses are fully vaccinated. Cats used to be but now I dont bother as we have a cat-secure garden so they don't come into contact with other cats, and don't go to catteries.

The young mare has flu and tet as we have started endurance riding. The old chap got very sick after having worming and vaccs close together. He is recovered but he now only has tet every 2 years, no flu vacc. He doesnt mix with other horses much and doesnt travel or compete.

I do think it is overdone and is esp tricky with horses that react badly to the vacc, it means no competitive career unless you are prepared to risk their health. With the older chap, as the vet said, if he gets flu he'll be poorly for a while, but if he reacts badly he might not make it!

I think annual vaccs is the most anyone should be required to do, and I think lapsed ones should also be a single vacc as although lower protection I think its acceptable given the other horses will be vaccd at comps.

Should add dogs are only done cos of kennels and the horses are not wormed unless worm count/blood test shows its needed, and fields are poo picked daily.

dog (8.5yo Lab, owned sice 7 weeks old)- fully vaccinated

horse no1 (semi retired 20yo mare, owned for 13yrs, out on loan) - was fully vaccinated back in the day but now just Tetnus done.

horse no2 (13yo eventer/RC horse, owned for 8yrs) - fully vaccinated for BE/RC purposes.

My cat is fully vaccinated. She is a house cat and has been since she was born so technically doesnt really need it, but when I visit family in the North she comes with me as she is happier to spend 5 hours in the car with me and then with me in my mums house than be left at home with someone popping in to feed her. My mum has a cat who goes out and although they don't socialise (hate each other) when I visit I prefer to make sure she is protected from anythiny my mums cat may be carrying. We had a nasty scare on New Years Day when she got quite ill and the vet thought she may have contracted leukemia so since then I make sure she is protected as I would hate to lose her.

Also,if she is fully vaccinated, if I ever need to take her to a cattery in an emergency (it really would be last resort but best to be prepared) then I can.

We have our horses who compete vaccinated to meet regulations - but the old pony and horse who doesnt compete any more are no longer done - other than making sure that their tetanus jabs are up to date, which is important. I never have my cats done as never leave the garden or go into a cattery, so never meet other animals.

Interesting views! I always wonder about the over vaccinating possibilities, but I haven't seen enough evidence on the subject and my animals are in excellent health with regard to vaccs (dog's problem totally unrelated) so I'm happy to continue.

Am interested to read though, that some think its 'cruel' and 'dangerous' but do it because otherwise they couldn't go to shows.

Surely if you really believed it was cruel and dangerous you'd give up the competing for the sake of your horse????????

Horses are both vaccinated. We have 5 cats, all have been fully vaccinated all their lives, but 2 of the boys were due their jabs in May. We had a lot of things go on around the time, and I totally forgot to get them done. After reading this post, am now debating whether to get them re-started or not.

horses yes

our yard/pet cat not, it is unfortunately more likely his heart issues will get him first, though he did the snow quite well and has already managed to double his prognosis life span :)

Not if it's your life and income :)

So, to play devils advocote (sp!!), I you think something is CRUEL its ok as long as you do it for your job??????????????????????????

Erm, I'm not sure you're thinking about the wording......... :)

I've just re-read the post it was in question about....Cruel, then absolutely not then.
However, a case of simply not agreeing with the vaccinating system, then letting personal feelings aside and vaccinating them to be able to carry on your profession, is a different matter.

I'm notoriously bad at wording thoughts in words. Especially 4 hours sleep, only 1pm and I want my duvet back already. And 4 neddies to now ride. Apologies!

Ha ha!!! Bless you!!!!!!! I didn't think you'd read it right!!!!!!!!!!!!! I agree, thinking its cruel and simply not agreeing with the system are two different things requiring two different schools of thought!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't worry, I was supposed to ride 3, drive 1, but sick dog and sick child home from school stopped me, and sleep deprivation from waking every half hour to check dog (not child he he!!;) ) has made my brains a bit mushy toooooo !!!!!!!!!!!!!

:D :D :D

There is a lot of discussion about this just now. Apparently the vacs for dogs last about 6 years. A booster every year is over vaccinating apparently and can cause a bad reaction.
I have been told by various breeders etc that they don't vaccinate as they worry about the reaction. Also after the initial vacs, if they are in contact with other dogs and out and about, they build up their immune system anyway and the booster can end up being too much.
I have always been on time with boosters etc but I am really quite worried about it. My mare is due hers in a few weeks and as she is 20, I worry that because of her age it may affect her badly. She is never at shows so that isn't a problem.
Really interested in everyones response to this.
