Vaccination dilemma

Hi,
I've been a bit of a wally and completely forgotten to keep my mare's vaccinations up to date. She is going on loan to a friend of the family in the next month. So my question is - do I wait and get her vaccs up to date before sending her off, not vaccinate her and hope/ask that her new home vaccinate her, or is it possible to start the course of vaccs and get their vet to administer the 2nd/3rd injection?

if you think anything of her you won't chose option 2 because if they forget to vaccinate or choose not to do it, it could be very dangerous for your mare. The more likely of the two things that she could get by not being vaccinated is tetanus and after seeing photos of a horse with tetanus you wouldn't want her to get that, believe me.

I'd ring the vet and see if tis possible to do option three and combine the flu and tetanus injections together.

The primary course of 2 injections for equine flu are 4-6 weeks apart with the first booster six months after the 2nd primary injection with subsequent boosters every 12 months. There is more risk of your horse developing tetanus or Equine flu than there is of any complications following the vaccination.

If its any consolation I forgot to do my horses booster and had to restart the course again because I was competing under rules and financially it was very expensive but worth it for peace of mind. I would never forgive myself if my horse, or my dog got something life threatening because I didn't get them vaccinated. Then again after seeing some horrible side effects of the strangles vaccine when it was first brought out (and my vet refusing to use it again in his practice as a result) I would never inflict that vaccine on my horse!
