Do you vaccinate your dogs and if not why not? I vaccinate my dog but my sister doesn't. Her arguement is she can't afford to vaccinate three dogs - my arguement is if she can't afford to vaccinate them she shouldn't have them, esp as they mix with dogs all the time....

Yes it isn't that expensive to vaccinate dogs, its only done once a year, as a family member i think that its only fair they have them.
Parvo is a horrible way for a dog to die, and it can be easily avoided.

She says they are insured

I can't beleive she's being like this, it's made me so angry

They work on her OH's farm during the day but one of them goes with her to work - she works on local farms doing paperwork etc so it meets everything on the farms then goes home to the other dogs where they are all walked in the public park in the evening.

My old girl only had her first 2 jabs & has just now (7yrs later) had the course again.
Nothing to do with expense at all but I do think it is over kill jabbing them every year, as do alot of vets now.
She goes out gets covered in crap in rivers. You name it she's been there or in it. Never had a sniffle out of her. Bar one bout of gastroenteritis.
She will not be vacced again now.

My young girls has had her first 2 & will be due a booster soon.

She might find they aren't insured if they aren't vaccinated. Our insurance specifies they have to be and on the claim form it asks the vet to fill in the date of the last vaccination.

Correct...she will not be covered if they are not vaccinated if they get the likes of parvo, lepto e,t,c, mine are all vaxed up until a certain age, I would not take the risk with me working in a vets that deals with these viruses on a regular basis.

I keep my dog's jabs up to date probably more for my own peace of mind. I never used to however and had a dog die of pancreatitus (sp?) - but at the time we didn't know what was wrong and at one point the vet thought it might be Parvo. If he had died of Parvo when I could have vaccinated against it I would never have forgiven myself - that dog was very special.

Having seen the things that can be vaccinated against first hand, I find it very difficult to understand people who don't - especially on the 'can't afford to' route. Its shockiingly expensive it they do contract one.

The idea of over loading the immune system has also be disproved more than its been proved in the last couple of years. Some people now decide to have bloods done at what should be booster time to test the levels in the blood is sometimes only required to do one or two rather than having the whole DHPPi - does that make any sense? I'm having a bad morning!

All ours are vaccinated, until at least 7 or 8 years old, our older dogs never go off the farm so we don't vaccinate them any more, as they should be covered from all the vaccinations they had early on in their life!
We have just got another dog and although the owner says he does it himself buying them in from America, I don't want to take any chances and we are planning on getting her done from scratch so we have got paperwork for it!!

I still think it over kill jabbing them every year as do a number of vets.
The fact that there are more pets reacting to the jabs & it impeeding their immune system rather than helping it.
This I do believe is why there are so many problems with pets now. Be it skin, digestion & such.
This I also see happening in horses as well.

Why do we not get vaccinated every year for anything? Or is that because we generally get them free (via NHS) so does not make as much money for the dug companies???

Hunt kennels I very much doubt vaccinate their hounds every year. I'm sure they give the first 2 lots & then leave them to it. The hounds go out & cover all sorts of terraine & mix with normal dogs. They all seem to be able to live a good life without any problems.

No. We had to vaccinate annually when we used boarding kennels, but I believe that it is unnecessary after the first few years. Our dog rarely comes into contact with other dogs, and is wormed and de-flea'd regularly. There is a school of thought that repeated vaccinations can be detrimental to a dog's health.

I have to vaccinate mine.

She's a well-travelled pooch, and must have her passport and all other papers in order at all times, in case we need to travel (in particular back to the UK) at short notice.
