Vaccinations flu and tet

I thought my boy was up to date with all his jabs, but noticed prior to his recent vaccination that the vet had never given the first tetanus booster 🙄 so I’m having to restart that. The issue I have is I’ve booked on to an Endurance GB ride and have just realised that the flu vaccination he had in 2024 was a day over the year since his 2023 one 😫 So I’m probably now also going to have to restart his flu! I can get his second one done at 3 weeks and still have more than 7 days before the ride which is within their rules, but can I also get tetanus done at 3 weeks? It’s advised 4-6 weeks for tetanus, but that means having the vet out a total of 3 times within 2 months, which is going to be a huge expense (we all know call out fees are extortionate). Can I get second flu and tetanus both at 3 weeks apart does anyone know?
So frustrating that a single day out means I have to restart, especially when endurance was never something I thought I’d do!

I’m pretty sure they’re going to tell me to restart the flu, which is fine (it’s not but it is as I have time to do that). I’m just wondering if the tetanus can be given 3 weeks apart instead of 4-6 weeks

It’d be considered normal to give both 3 weeks apart and not to worry about it
Thankyou. I know when I originally started his vaccinations I did both 4-5 weeks apart. Just with the tetanus saying 4-6 weeks I was worried 3 would be too soon.

He needs to restart his tet as previous vet never gave him his original booster, I don’t need it for the ride, but would prefer not to have 3 vet call outs in the space of 6 weeks!

I would take a view that he is, in all likelihood, adequately covered for tetanus by having had several vaccines in his life.

Have you spoken to your vet about this?

I only ask as the thinking on tetanus for humans has changed in the last few years. I stood on a black thorn thorn in the first lockdown and had to go and have a tetanus jab to be sure I was covered (they say black thorn and sheep are the worst for tetanus - I have both). Anyway it turns out they now think that 5 jabs in your lifetime gives you enough immunity. So I think a chat with your current vet to see what the best way forward is. If he's had his first 2 then there might be some leeway (maybe)

The vet was rather wishy washy and said he may have some level of cover but to be sure I should restart.
Thankfully though I’ve just got off the phone to them and they are happy to do the tet w week early so flu and tet can both be done on the same visit to save me callout fees!!

There are only two initial tetanus vaccinations and then it's every other year.

Flu is three initial vaccinations and then yearly for most horses, provided it's within date.
It’s actually two initial vaccinations, booster 12 months later, then every other year. Regardless, his tetanus isn’t up to date so I’m restarting that as well as his flu. My query was whether the second tetanus could be given at 3 weeks with the flu, which my vet has confirmed it can so I’m sorted with only two callouts

That’s great, vet was the ideal person to ask really.
