my 4 year old has always been fine post jabs
she had one last week (friday) and it produced a diffuse swelling on her neck.
its really quite tender and still there.
ive not had one react before- how long does it take to go down?!

My mare had a reaction many years ago - she was vaccinated in the neck and it became so stiff that she couldn't eat off the ground for a couple of days. Since then we have avoided the particular brand of vaccine that caused the reaction and she has been vaccinated in her quarters just in case. She hasn't reacted again, and it's been over 10 years now.

My mare had her vaccine in her chest once a few years ago, she was fine until the next day where she had a huge swelling and seemed to loose all her coordination she didn't seem to know where to put her feet, it was quite distressing to watch, the vet advised a few days of bute and she was right as rain again.

My previous horse couldn't be jabbed in the neck because it caused problems like these.

You may well need to get the vet to have a look if it has abcessed.

One of our mares had this same problem.
We ended up having her ultra sounded and x-rayed as the lump made her lame. Courtesy of the vaccine company....

It turned out to be nothing, just purely a reaction. Its becoming more and more frequent these days, freaking people out. But from my experience it was scary at first not knowing what it was. Our mares fine now, no long term effects!

my 10 yo tb has fairly bad reactions to the innoculations - i have not noticed any lumps, but he does seem to lose his balance, he acts as if he has been on the booze, so i have asked the vet not to use the same vaccine next time, see if it makes any difference, i was really worried about him - at first he was having trouble staying on his feet, then with his second one, he got the shivers. poor boy, he was shaking all over, i was really worried about him. my pony never had a reaction like this...it has really put me off having his jabs.

I have 2 horses, the younger of which always gets a reaction to vaccinations. The site of the injection becomes swollen, hot and tender. The first time he had a big swelling on his neck and it was quite stiff so I had to give him a few days off. The next time, he was given the injection in his rump which again reacted. We've tried giving him the jab in the chest wall, just above the front legs but this made no difference as he still got the reaction. I dont know what the answer is only that the effects take a few days to wear off with no permanent damage.

I have had my beloved 24 year old arab vaccinated every year with no problems.

He is barefoot (he had been shod for 13 years) and in Dec, after altering his diet since August, he had textbook perfect feet.

The he was vaccinated in Jan. Ten days later he went lame for the first time in his life. Both front feet lost all their concavity and the soles went from solid to soft. He developed and abcess which would not burst and turned into osteomylitis, requiring 10 days as an inpatient.

He was ridden for the first time this week after having the last 5 months off.

He went from really healthy to that in 10 days and the only thing that changed was the vaccines. I believe his body just can't take that kind of invasion anymore so I will not vaccinate him again.

I am going to think very hard before I vaccinate my other, younger horse again too.

Oberon - I also stopped vaccinating my old girl (27 now) about 3 years ago. My vet said she had a lifetime's worth of tetanus vaccine washing around her system and as she never leaves her field these days, is less likely to catch flu anyway. If she was to cut herself I would just have a tet anti-toxin jab. Elderly animals seem to be affected much more by vaccinations. My mum's old cat used to be really poorly for days after.
