Thank you all for your brilliant help. I went to the shop today with my list of what I wanted and we have come away with a Panasonic upright eco something or other .
Have road tested it when we got home and it has done a brilliant job.
One happy bunny now with a much cleaner house.

What is it? I seem to kill mine or rather the animal hair does.. I have murdered 2 dysons, 1 miele and am now on a hoover... which while only a year old is definately not doing such a good job (and I do clean filters etc)

My Sebo has been tackling our filth for 10 years! Last summer it wasn't picking up too well so I replaced the brushes and filters and got a new hose (all available off the shelf at John Lewis), it is as good as new. Mind you it cost an arm and a leg to start with.
I'd like one of the robot ones, but they look too small to cope with all the dirt we produce.
