Are the valerian based calmers any good and if so, any product recommendation?
I have a young mare coming back into work from injury and don’t like using POM sedatives (ACP, Sedalin etc), as find they create unpredictable behaviour. I’ve tried the competition legal type calmers but they aren’t working and I just need something to take the edge off for calm inhand walking. Thanks

When needed my go to was always valerian root. I only ever used the natural root mixed in a feed. If possible it is best given for a few days before whatever situation you are trying to calm them down for. For the in hand walking etc. I would happily feed it every day until no longer needed.

I conducted my own little test over the years with my TB as I was very sceptical about calmers and Valerian was the only thing that had any effect. I bought pure valerian in herbal form, can’t remember who from though and used it regularly.
I think the fact that it’s the only calmer that’s banned by FEI and others speaks volumes despite all the claims of other calmer manufacturers

Can recommend either James Hart V Calm or Pegasus Val-Kalm they are the strongest tincture on the equine market, we used them when our then 5 year old was on 6 months box rest & they definitely helped.
