has anyone used a valerian based calmer? and if so , which one and what do you think of it?

am thinking of trying hilton herbs Temperamend/Response or something similar as magnesium based supplements dont seem to do the trick with my TB

i realise valerian is illegal for competing but just need something to bring my horse back into work and wont be doing any comps til spring

I used lincoln valerian on my horse-its had no effect whatsoever!!But i have just about figured out he will not get calmer

Equine America do a valarian based one, you can also try Chro mag which works on some horses where the normal magnesium calmers have no effect.

I found that a lot of the magnesium based ones did not give any real improvement, (and the herbal ones were totally useless!!) but Blue Chip Karma was good probably because its a liquid so gets digested better.

No experience with valerian calmers but can highly recommend Global Herbs, Super Calm, has worked wonders on my mare.

However with calmers what works on some may not work on others.

I havent tried it on a horse but I have tried a human valerian calmer on myself (I have a bit of a phobia about doing presentations - particularly to large groups of people) Anyway it worked really well (better than rescue remedy). I tried it out first on a normal day as I didnt know if it would fog my brain, which would have been a total nightmare! It worked so well that for the first time ever I fell asleep on the train on the way home and ended up miles away on the south coast! It didnt make me feel that my brain was full of cotton wool, just very relaxed. So based on my experience I would say there is definitely something in it and would be worth a try on your horse!

Wendals Herbs do a clamer that have Valerian root in it, it seems to do the trick for most of the horses on out yard. I cant use it on Arch though coz of comps, so I use Blue Chip Karma and its fab.
But like some one esle said, what works on one horse may not work on another

I use the Hilton Herbs Temperamend, and can say it works on my TB, I would say the taste/smell of it gets a bit of getting used too, as it is very strong, but I noticed a difference in 10 days of feeding it.
