Hey!
So i was wondering, i'm training alot of "untrainable" horses at the moment and i figured i would try and give them some Valerian.
Does anyone have any experience in how to add them to the feed? I use a tincture root.
How many times and for how long is it safe?
Thank you!
p.s. Also if anyone has experience of Thyme, Lavender and Basil please let me know how to add it to the feed and how much to use.

It works, the is why it's banned for competion. Unlike every other calmer, the science is proven - it's a drug, like Sedalin.

Which is not to say it doesn't have its uses in training, managing horses on box rest, treating anxious horses etc. I don't use it a lot but I certainly have, with good results.

The question might be though, why do you have "a lot" of difficult horses? Is there the option of changing management? I presume you're taking them for professional training, in which case I would suggest getting the owners' permission before feeding anything new, just in case. Also, be aware, that when they come off the Valerian they will potentially revert unless the training and experiences they have had on it stick.

It's reasonably safe. I have no idea how it effects horses but it does give me a hellish hangover headache the next day. :)

With my husbands 16.3 ex racer we put a desert spoon of dry Valarian into a mug with just boiled water. Left it to cool and mixed it into feed. Used it daily for a fortnight and then once every 3 days from then onwards. Worked well and not expensive

I work with alot of horses that owners have given up on, it's sort of a last resort.
i have one that is specifically difficult now, He is extremly nervous all the time, takes me forever to catch him in the meadow and he seems to be scared of all the other horses.
I figured that giving him Valerian might help calm him down, just for his sake.
I don't feed him because he is in a meadow grazing so it would have to be something on the side.
This is also why im figuring if there is a way to give him it in a long term, since im not just looking to calm him down for a ride.
thank you

I use the valerian cordial made by lincoln, I wish I found it years ago, what an effect, which is why it is banned ! flippin works though. 10 mls a day

Yes i have used and used valerian it works!!! but you cant compete on this under rules, i do how ever use camomile powder which i find very good, and you can use this when competing, hope that helps you, whom your buying your stuff from should be giving you your advise on how much you feed xxx
