My weird horses slight madness has been fairly widely broadcast on here. I've tried every calmer on the market i think along with lots of other things. (including bute trials on rec. of my vet)

He's pretty much been out of work since before christmas as I cant take him alone incase something sets him off, my usual riding partner doesn't ride in rain or wind so I think we have done 6 days since December. The last ride prior to yesterdays he was really chilled and lovely after the initial "ahhhh I'm going hacking"
Yesterday, I had a bit of a job to catch and tack up because he was on mega high alert- Tearing from one end of the field to the other. standing giraffe like and snorting staring across the field before taking off to the other end and repeating.
Felt pretty lethal once on board, although he did calm down about half way round.
I mean, this randomness is pretty normal, he can be wired one day and chin at his knees kick a long the next but I am wondering if its the valerian i tried.
I have been giving him a scoop of Valerian root. It stank and i was amazed he ate it as he's had to build up from a pinch of everything else, sometimes I can't get the full dose into him at all. He had chilled a fair bit. Calmer in the field in hindsight but maybe I'd not really noticed as he's not been ridden.
Last week I ran out and not remembering where i got it i bought a bottle of valerian root tincture instead.
Would the two be much different? We also had the hunt within hearing on Saturday so could have been the left over excitement from that or a leaf may have blown in the wrong direction at some point, but I'm wondering if i ditch the liquid and get more root.

nb- on a side note has anyone sniffed the tincture? Almost blew my head off, even the smell of his feed makes me feel a bit odd!

Tinctures do work, but they are not equal. Strength will vary from batch to batch, even with a standardised process. Could well be the valerian, though. It's one of the few herbals that's banned under FEI, which is normally a good sign that it works. ;)

And that played a part in why i decided to give it a try after swearing not to waste any more money on supplements!
Its the Hilton Herbs one, I have no idea what the root was, I decanted it into a plastic tub so don't have the packaging annoyingly. Would the root form vary as well or not so much because its just dried?

All natural products have batch variation, due to growth environment, sub-species and so on. Extracting as a tincture just adds another variation level!

I never found the tincture much use. The root on the other hand was perfect for dealing with the hyped up madness without losing the enthusiasm and a bit of a spark (which I liked then - I was much younger 😊 )
Interesting, I hadn’t really noticed the root had done much until I switched.
Pretty sure I’d be the opposite if I tried the tincture I’d be on my back!
