Valuations of horses and horseboxes

Hi, i'm kind of new to the forum world. Well I have read some of the posts for a while now. I have been Intrigued at some of the posters valuations on different things. So I thought that I would share some of my observations.

I have really noticed that when people ask questions regarding the value of either their horses or their horseboxes the valuations tend (not always) to be on the low side. Now I know that everyone wants a bargain, but at the same time everyone wants a realistic reflection of the market. Obviously there are many adverts for horses or horseboxes which are over priced and consequently don’t sell hence either price reductions at a later date or owners taking an offer. After all something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Anyway the point of this post is that there a many occasions where I have thought that the prices given are very very low, and I am sure that the original poster in some instances is quite shocked.

In contrast to this though I have read some post where people have described the type of horse they want and the prices quoted for the money they would need to spend have been extortionate. I have often wondered if they spent this money on ‘said’ horse and then asked for a valuation a week later (now they owned it) how different the price would be.

I not trying to create an argument or insult anyone, just interested to here other people opinions on this.
 
I think part of the problem is that when people are describing the horse they want to buy, they describe an absolute paragon of a horse - usually 15.2-16.2hh all-rounder, 7-10 years old, good in all ways, hacks alone and in company, excellent in traffic, capable of jumping 1m courses and doing respectable Prelim/Novice dressage tests, totally sound, no vices or health problems etc. Now there are not many of these desirable animals around with no quirks or problems at all, so posters get told, quite rightly, that a decent sum of money will be needed to buy one.

On the other hand, when posters describe a real horse that they want to sell, we usually find it has some quirks or disadvantages - may be in its teens, have sarcoids, won't hack alone, dodgy in traffic, etc., etc. So the price people give will be lower. It is the difference between pricing a real horse and an 'ideal' one!
 
I think the price of something, as you said it relative to what someone is willing to give for it..
But, there's also an element of how much you want to sell it as well..

I have a horse that i'm being pressured into selling at the end of the season (lack of funds to keep her)..
Her record isn't the best.. silly mistakes XC all with a good excuse.. and fairly crap dressage marks, again, good excuse.. Because of this, her true value is going to be fairly low.. BUT, because i don't really want to sell her, and i truely think she is the best thing since sliced bread and destined to much bigger/better things.. when i do advertise her, i'm going to put a silly/big price on her.. well over what i know she is worth...

Hence why on here.. things are always going to be as you stated above... If you're desperate to sell, it's cheap.. if your desperate to buy it's expensive
 
I completely understand what you are saying about the 'ideal and reality, but a large pecentage of the horses advertised have some issue (big or small) just depends on how the buyer rates its significance. My point is that often the valuations given are much lower than the market place comparibles.


with regard to horseboxes i have read things such as anything less than £10'000 is trouble. is this really true??? in reality their are plenty of good boxes in this budget...but in the same breath when people have asked for valuations of some really nice boxes the prices in general (not all) have been low. Comments like 'if you want a quick sale', well I too think that a few thousand under the price will ensure a very quick sale, but equally possible is a sale at a realistic value compared with similar boxes.

like I said before, just intrested to hear peoples thoughts on this. I have to say however I dread to think what some of you guys would value my box at.

re. lorries... i don't think that anything under £10k is trouble..
We sold our old lorry, back in Jan.. it was K-reg Daf, had a nice living, and all was in perfect working order.. we sold it for £6.5k.. and i think the people who bought it will have a bargin...
I've just bought a G-reg Volvo, lorry itself is in perfect working order, but the luxuries in the living need bringing back to life.. i'm VERY pleased with it, and i paid £3.6k...

Value is a strange thing.. i think it depends on how much you want to sell it..
 
Yes I don’t really understand either!! Also depends who is asking!

On the wagon front, I guess for people with plenty of money anything under 10k will be “trouble” but for everyone else – we’ll have to take that risk!

Its down to market conditions, time of year, the area, and how your price as seller
maches the buyer's idea of a fair price you can look at what similar things are advertised and get a average value but at the end its can you sell for that price and will someone pay it !!! as for someone saying a lorry isnt going to be any good under 10k well thats rubbish im sure you could get a 5 grand lorry that will be ok and you could pay 30 + grand for one thats nothing but trouble as was the case with one another board member on here had,ie problems which ended in needing a new engine and having to pay a fortune for labour because it was a poor build with a fixed cab... so I think everything needs to be judged on its merits ...
