Was having a chat with a friend today about possibly selling my lad and got onto the subject of selling good proven hunters.

How much would you say is the going rate for a really good genuine hunting horse? And how would you say age and height effect this? Are people still parting with large sums of cash for them?

Friends and my own ideas were quite diffrent hence topic :)

I bought a 7/8 year old six years ago for £2k. Seasoned hunter with one of the Leicestershire packs.

Had been a whips horse but very mannerly and easy to deal with. Small child or granny could have taken him out and had a good day. His only problem was he would kick if anything rammed up his bottom.

He could be a pita showjumping, so I'm not sure how he would have got on having to jump loads of hedges/fences etc hunting, but round me there is not much of that ilk anyway, just ditches which he was great at (saw him doing better than a 3* eventer)

So moral of the story.., if your lucky you can get a good one cheap

I guess it depends what else they'll do as well.

If they're easy to hack alone and might turn their hoof to something else in the summer months I would think they're more valuable to the average person.

wench sounds like you did well :)

Well friend mentioned how a friend of hers had sold a 8yr a year ago for over 10k for just being a good hunter with potential to do more. In my case horse has done a few seasons, competed and done V well mannered and I wouldn't have dreamed of asking that much for him!

It probably also depends what part of the country you are. I was discussing this with a couple of friends who have yards and when i said i was thinking my boy might not be right for eventing, they both said that if he will hunt then let them know cos they have people wanting hunters and they were talking about people willing to pay about 10k !!

Mine was a good hunter, would also hack alone but would have a tantrum if you took him to something else he didn't want to do (many previuos posts about this)

With us I know of a number iro £10k, but just as many that cost less than 3k, depends who you are selling to & what they expect, to replace my horse that hunts well tomorrow I'd need to spend a good 6k+, he didn't cost me that, but its almost October, 4 weeks to opening meet, & if I wanted to buy an almost fit hunter that I could pitch up to the opening meet without thinking about ifs or buts, I'd need to spend some reasonable money,

Equally if I only had 1k I'm sure I could find something that went in a straight line & left the ground with all 4 legs! But not everyone will sit on those while the decide if they like hunting

In answer, yes, there is always a market, there are always lots of (mainly) men who want an easy ride & will pay to get it, ;)

Last one for my OH lovely looking ID knew his job sensible looked after the rider was £8000 but it failed the vet but that's another story.

i think good well mannered proven hunters will always fetch a decent price esp at this time of year if 3/4 fit and out doing the job! for the above 7K market they also have to look very smart, do the job immpeccably, and be capable of doing a bit of something else too!!
