Didn't want to pounce on ME's thread :)

When insuring a youngster (rising 2) how do you estimate value? Is it just a basic worth or do you look at breeding/potential etc?
Also, best company to insure with please? :)

I meant *valuing* lol

I'd take into account stud fee, breeding and what it's done- if anything. You will probably have to justify your valuation in any case so (for eg)

My stud fee was £500 (start with £1500)
He is vaccinated/wormed/feet trimmed to date (£500), good to catch, halter broken, been placed in local youngstock shows (£500).

Well bred- sire is international sj, mare has jumped up to grade C etc. This is just a guide- will not work if you have a mini shetland/donkey/native etc but add on a couple of hundred for every "selling point".

Of course, if you bought him, it will have to reflect the selling price plus anything that you have done with him since.

Thanky :)
I didn't breed her, bought her in the womb and had her from 5 months :D

She came from an Arab breeding stud :)

Not necessarily Divasmum - Harvey is insured with NFU valued at £4000 and I've just got a quote from them to insure Nemo at what I paid for him (under £1000) and the premium is about the same! Their prices have rocketed and they told me that it is the vets fees that bumps the premium up now.
However I also got a quote from Scottish Equestrian and they do go on value, so it's worth shopping around - their quote was almost half of the one from NFU.

I would say, for insurance purposes, until they are broken in/performing, you would either say purchase price (if applicable) or stud fee + £1000 ish. This would be for your averagely bred sports youngstock. Obviously this would rise for seriously bred babies.

For example, I purchased a 20 month old for £2000 - nicely bred event type out of graded stallion with stud fee of £600 and a performance mare.

He was insured for £2000 until 3yo at which point he had done PAVO and a couple of other bits so insurance were happy to raise it to £3000. Arguably he could have been worth a bit more but kept insurance on low side to keep premiums down.
