I've never had to really think about valuing a horse before, seeing as I've never sold one

It was mentioned today whilst on the phone to my insurance company that we may need to get Ellie valued, in order to ascertain what value she has 'lost' after the accident. The vet today seemed quite certain that she will now have capped hocks, which he said would definitely impact on her value, particularly as a competition horse.

Obviously, if we do need to get an official valuation I would get it done properly, but I suddenly realised today that I have no idea what she may be worth

15.2 SF x Arab mare (Grandsire Alme Z)
15 years old
Competed successfully both BSJA and unaffiliated up to 1.15m (BSJA approx £300, also Reserve Trailblazers Champs @ 95cm)
Also has hunted and done all PC/RC activities with 12+ yr old girl (makes me feel old now, I tell you!!!)

What kind of value would you put on her? I honestly have no idea! Also, what effect would you say that capped hocks would have on her value, if any? Would it put you off as a buyer?

As I said before, I will get it done properly if I need to - I just thought here may be the best place to ask as there is a wealth of horsey-selling knowledge! :D

I wouldn't have thought that capped hock would decrease her value at all! Surely it's purely cosmetic? Insurers won't cover cosmetic issues.

Can the vet give you any idea of value, as they do all the vettings and stuff ? Just thinking out loud really. Hope you are both doing ok after the nightmare. sm xx

I was thinking the same about capped hocks-thats just cosmetic scarring right? and quite often it goes away, why would that decrease value?

The vet said that it would certainly have an impact on value because of the implications; ie. limited flexion during dressage, and obviously in the show ring. I have spoken to a couple of people today who buy and sell, and both have said that they would not be put off buying a horse with capped hocks, but that it would make them want to barter for some money off if the horse injured itself in such a way before they had collected it...

I spoke to my insurers today and they actually said that claiming loss of use would be an option, but that to me seems OTT for capped hocks so I said it's not an option for me. Whatever I claim for, it will be through the insurance of the driver who hit us.

So really, I'm just looking for an idea of her value in general, as I have no idea!!!!!

Given her age and the fact that her compettiion winnings are from a fair while back, nothing current, you are probably looking at a value of £2000 ish.

I don't think capped hocks would have a massive impact on her value, but there would be the odd buyer put off by them.
