Has anyone ever heard of varicose veins in horses? I ask as I have seen a horse advertised that ticks all my boxes (unbroken 3 year old gelding) but ad states it has a large varicose vein on chest, and goes on to say '... seen by a vet and has been scanned and found to be a varicose vein unlikely to affect normal work'. So alarm bells are ringing but interested to know what on earth it is?

Yes I was was told my horse of a lifetime had one by the vet. His was caused by trauma we think, it was horrid, on the inside of his upper foreleg. I was told it could be removed or drained, sorry cant remember the exact facts as it was years ago but I was told it would be pretty much a blood bath and we used tubigrip bandages (human version) instead. I did this for weeks, it was unsightly but one day it had just gone. Really strange but I wasnt complaining.

My yard owner's horse has one, on his side low down behind where the leg goes.

It is a bit unsightly but you don't notice it when he is working has never bothered him (she's had him quite a long time now-he's ready to go out prix st george) and meant she could afford him!

Thank you, sounds like it is indeed a thing then, even if fairly uncommon. Do they look like big lumpy veins? I can't imagine what they look like, especially on a dark coloured horse. Anyway, even though this horse is well bred and affordable, its probably not going to be what I want it to be unfortunately.
