Vaulting on to your horse?

I used to do the running vault in pc, was really easy once you got the hang of it, we started off with pony on the lunge so all we had to cope with was getting on then when you get the hang of that you need to teach horse to start trotting off when you want them too. My little pony I used for pc would start trotting or cantering as soon as you put your hands in the position to vault.
I'm sure I saw John Whitaker vaulting on from standstill many years ago.

I used to be able to launch myself onto a 13.2hh pony but no higher than that!
No tips, but I found it much easier when the pony is moving.

Umbongo, you're braver than I. I've always had quite a strong aversion to that, on the basis that I'd have a good chance of missing the pony altogether. As it is, I've been thrown right over a massive horse several times by an over-enthusiastic legger-upper.

Used to do it all the time as a kid, in my teens could get on any size horse from the ground whether still or moving. Now I'm ok getting on my 14.2, & reckon I could manage maybe 15hh, but I'd need either stirrups or a log etc to jump onto a 17.2hh. I can still leapfrog on to a 14hh cob, as its my duty to teach my child the essentials! At 8 she can jump on her 11.1, & a friends 12.2.

The very wrong side of 40 and i can still manage a swing vault onto 13.3hh, haven't tried it on the bigger one as he would poop his pants if i appeared without a mounting block.

Used to be able to bounce on but my knees complain too much now, the swing is quite easy to be honest as you are throwing yourself sideways rather than upwards so once you get a heel over it's easy to pull the rest of you over.

i ride bareback about four times a week. Call it being too lazy to put a saddle on, but I honestly prefer it. Anyway, i have to get on from the top step of the mounting block (or get a leg up). If I then got off, I would have to use a gate to get back on.

NEVER have I had the ability to vault on a horse, and I would love to be able to do it - alas with a dodgy back and dodgy balance (i ride bb to help with this), I have zero chance. :o

There was a fabulous video on here last month about a trainer getting a horse out of rearing, and her vault on technique was amazing ! She always rode rearers without saddles, and had to get onto these massive things - can anyone find that video ?
