vauxhall omega

thanks rog, i have had no dealings with omegas , i have mostly towed with 4+4 's but quite like the looks of some of them , quite cheep as well ! kind regards rich.

I used to tow with an Omega years ago ( one horse) and would never know I had a trailer on the back. Before the time when cars were seen as a 'nono' to tow with!

The Omega doesn't have a good reputation 'in the trade'.... How do I know - I worked on them day in, day out for four years...

2 litre versions are underpowered and leak oil from the cam cover gasket, which fouls the plugs and and can then blow the coil pack/leads causing misfire which if left takes the catalytic convertor out too - as well as making a mess everywhere on your drive!

2.5 and 3 litre v6 versions leak oil from both cam cover gaskets, which fouls plugs and or/blows coil pack - or the coil pack just blows for fun...

Oil coolers on V6 versions blow readily filling the coolant with pressurized oil - turning it into gunk, which can then overheat the engine and blow headgasket(s) and crack head(s)...

All above jobs, especially on the V6 versions are horribly expensive due to total absence of space to work on engine and having to take fifty bits of to get to the one you want...

Don't get me started on V6 exhausts - if you need one bit, budget on replacing the whole lot as it'll never come apart or will fall off a few days later...

Oh and back springs break for fun too...

There's a reason they are cheap cars......

I may sound like I hate them, its just too many hours spent working on the wretched things....

thanks for that anp, very interesting , thats wot bothers me why are they cheap ! thought they might have made a good tow car , but dont want to be forever spending on the thing ! + need to be reliable , might give it a miss , had any dealings with vectras? regards rich.

I had an Omega diesel estate with the bmw engine. It was a lovely car and towed beautifully ON ROAD ONLY. the first time I took it out to a pony club rally I was really impressed with how it towed until I arrived at the venue. I had to park in a field and thats where my nightmare began :( it wasn't muddy and was summer time but we had had some rain overnight. I got well and truly stuck and nearly burnt the clutch out even after unloading the pony (had an IW 505).

I ended up having to unhitch the trailer and get one of the dads to hitch up his car to my trailer to move it. It was on a very slight slope but nothing major. The smell of burning in the car was dreadful and I decided there and then 4x4 it had to be.

We also had a problem with oil leaks (sorry don't know exact problem as my husband dealt with it) the other big shock was that we had no idea that the wheels were a strange size and the cheapest tyres we could find in Sussex/Surrey were £225 EACH! !

I was sad to see it go as was a lovely car. If you could guarantee you'd never have to park anywhere than hardstanding then you'd prob be ok but you can never say never I fear :( x

hi anp, thanks for takeing time to reply, possible about 05 redg ! just a thought , had astra gte , calibra , cavalier in past all good cars but they was quite new in the day , so was pretty trouble free ! sounds like you would not touch omege with barge pole , am i right ?

thanks neddy, anp says nightmare with oil leaks , just thought would make good tow car [ not horses] but might think again ! many thanks rich.

How about a ford mondeo diesel - not sure on you budget but I recently sold mine 55 plate for £1200 - lots around, parts cheap and great for towing ( fuel consumption good too ) - generally reliable too

I had a vauxhall omega years ago & it was a lovely comfy car but rubbish to tow & even though it was serviced regularly & well maintained it was the worst car l ever had & would literally advise anyond against buying one!!! l used to have a mk 3 mondeo estate & that was fantastic - towed lovely & was not expensive to run & maintain. However, after a friend having a nasty accident whilst towing with a car l decided to sell it & get a 4x4 instead. Since then l would never contemplate towing with a car again as a 4x4 is effortless & is better on fuel unless you're towing with a V8 range rover of course which is expensive but thats the cost of luxury. You can buy some fuel efficient 4x4s that are cheaper to buy & maintain than an everyday car. Hope you find a suitable vehicle soon :)

hi dizzyneddy, thanks for reply, used to have range rover vogue v8 when bussiness was very good lol , best tow car ever , allso v6 shogun swb was good ! i dont tow horses only generel purpus trailer , think will hold on till into new year and see wot finances are ! but other guy said he work't on omegas hated them ! amyway have safe and happy xmas kind regards rich.
