Over the weekend, a friend told me she feeds her horse Vegetable oil instead of Cod Liver oil as it does exactly the same thing for their joints etc., to me this sounds barmey and i think she could be harming her horse with the extra collestrol, has anyone ever heard of this and what are your views?

Eh? Vegetable oil is not high in cholestrol.

Vegetable oil is a slow release energy feed, can be fed up to half a pint a day (unless you are severely EPSM, then up to 2 pints) and gives a lovely gloss to the coat.

I suppose, if you have never been told, you arn't to know!

I would much rather feed an oil extracted from a plant than one that comes from a fishes liver....do you know what the liver actually does???!

Have feed it for Donkey's years it is an under used and valuable source of nutrition to horses and as a plant extract it is far more natural to a horse (a herbivore) than extract of a sea fish!

Plant Oils are far more natural to the horses digestive system than are grains.

Cold pressed is best and recent research from KER suggests feeding oils has a negating effect on glycemic reaction to sugars which could be a potential preventative life saver for laminitics!

Vegetable oils also play a vital role in the nutrition for geriatrics with no teeth left, I know of one 32 year old that was "Fed" 2 ltrs a day to maintain weight along with sloppy sugar beet and grass pellets.

Veg & soya oil all the way. Far cheaper, just as good, smells better and i too have always had issues with feeding meat substances to herbivores (what's that all about????!!!!) although my first pony was quite partial to and stole many a ham sandwich of mine when i was a teenager!!

I feed corn oil which is a type of vegetable oil as it provides a slow release energy I only feed thiswhen competing now as i feed alfa a oil but i use do feed vegetbale oil as is much cheaper. Does all the things that i fed cod live oil for and at a fraction of the price I use dto buy the big metal tins from tesco think they are about £9.00 for a massive tub which lasted ages and i wasnt shy aboutu feeding it
