Vegtables!!!

Sorry strange question but, I feed my horses sweeds every now and then when they are stabled to keep them amused and they love them. However someone I work with has grown some rather larger squashes (or is it butter nut squashes!

) and I was wondering if you can feed these to the horses or if anyone feeds them to their horses?

I have just introduced my boy to the delights of swede, thanks to Krash 'n' Burn - her horse loves them and now so does mine!

Are swedes & squashes all part of the same veg family? If so I would have thought they would be ok but I'll be interested in what people say.

I agree that as they are of the same family, they should be OK. Probably best to introduce a small amount at first in case.

I've always believed that it is only veg from the onion family that should not be fed to horses. Oh, and potatoes too.

i'd have thought squashes and pumpkins were off limits really... they're not root veg like swedes, and carrots, and we have to cook them for our use....

i'd keep checking, and stick to swedes, or raw sugar beet if ever you can find one thats fallen off a trailer - my horse loves them!

I used to feed cooked potatoes, and bread/cake waste, not sure about squashes. Tonight mine got hold of some celery leaves that were mixed in with the carrot peelings. They both loved them.
