Im am looking into gettin a trailer and vehicle to tow it with.

I need some recommendations. Im on a budget so the less i can spend the better. Im not interested in nothing to flash, just something to get me from a to b.

Thanks guys.

I've gone for a 2nd hand Kia Sorento XS (2.5 litre diesel, about 32mpg, more on a long run). It's supposed to be an excellent towcar (Caravan Club towcar of the year in heaviest weight bracket - actually that's a great site - the Caravan Club as you can read their towcar of the year brouchure, it gives you weights and things). The Sorento can tow about 1750kg at 85% of kerbweight, so would cover most trailers with one horse inside plus the usual paraphenalia. I've got a Cheval Liberte 2003XL (collected it on Fri so can't yet tell you if it's any good or not!).

Batesons are nice trailers - maybe you can pick up a 2nd hand one of them for a reasonable price?

Happy trailer/car hunting!

Get an Ifor trailer as they hold their value very well. And you can't go wrong with a Nissan Terrano for towing and general driving around.

You don't necessarily need a 4x4, especially if only one horse going in the box. Most of the modern trailers weigh under a tonne and with a horse of say 500kg you could easily tow with a 2 litre + engined car which would be upto towing 1.6t total. depends if you want to go onto fields (shows) which could potentially get tricky if you don't have 4WD.

I know what you mean! I sold my diesel Audi last year and got a petrol lease car, similar engine size etc but literally uses almost twice as much fuel! Have a look for a good solid diesel and if you can check the technical specification in the owners manual (or have a look on What Car website as they often have them) for the max towing capacity. I wouldn't push it up to the max for safety, but when I was a kid we always towed our horsebox and a big caravan with a regular family car, no trouble at all! If you got a single Ifor or the smaller 505 you should be well within the limits for a 2 litre engined car.

Bateson trailers - ours is fab, love it!!

We use a Mercedes E300 diesel for towing, one of the older types of Merc that are very solidly engineered. Got it from E-Bay, think it was about £2.5k, trailer was £2k second hand although we got it for alot less that it was worth, a friend needed rid and quick!

I'm giving serious thought to a Toyota Rav4 - 42+ mpg, 193 g/Km Co2 - will tow 1500Kg

Cheval Liberte weighs in at 500 - 600Kg for one horse (depending on width). So with horse at 500Kg, you're still well under the limit and it *should* get you out of tight spots.

second choice would be a Freelander - got a good review in one of the this month's 4x4 mags in terms of off-roadability, but the fuel consumption's rubbish.

Good luck

Be careful, you don't want to be towing (horse plus trailer plus tack/equipment plus car passengers) more than 85% of kerbweight - and a Rav 4's kerbweight is only about 1,300 kg I think (though I can't seem to find anywhere to check this), meaning a towing limit of 1,105kg.

The "towing limit" referred to in car brochures mustn't be exceeded, but only refers to the weight the handbrake can hold on a hill.

ive just bought a grand jeep cherokee and a bayhill trailer. havnt towed a trailer in years and never towed with 2 horses before. took out 16hh IDxTB and our chunky welsh out in it yesterday and wouldnt even have known the trailer was there. i paid £1900 for the jeep and £800 for the trailer.

Good point
kerb weights are here: http://www.cuddles.abelgratis.net/toyota.htm#rav4502

my pony only weighs 350Kg at most, so I'm OK, but heavier horses perhaps ought to check...
