Veiwing a youngster?

As title says I'm going to a view a youngster at the weekend; a yearling friesian filly :)
I know all the obvious things to make sure she is well handled etc but what else should I do/ask when viewing her? Don't want to forget anything!
 
I would ask to see her FPS papers (assuming she is reg!) to make sure that is all above board, there have been problems with breeders/dealers faking papers in the past so its something to be aware of.

With a youngster you cant really ask too much as they wont have done anything! It might be worth asking if she's been exposed to any traffic or anything, and what sort of handling she has had (whether she will lead, pick up feet etc), just any general questions you feel might be helpful in making your decision.

I bought my mare as a yearling unseen, based on her pedigree :D The owners sent me some decent pictures of her so i could see what she was like of course, and i had her vetted before purchasing her but theres not too much to see with a yearling. So i'd just be handling her and seeing if she is the type/temperment you wanted. My girl was very sweet and calm right from day one, so if this one is nervy or anything i'd be a bit wary.

The trouble with yearlings is that they can look like ugly ducklings at that age, and turn out to be swans, so don't be too put off by something that looks a bit gangly. Ask to see her move, obviously, and I would be inclined to ask to see all of her paperwork, particularly if they are claiming that she is FPS registered. Are the vendors also the breeders? If so, I would also ask to see her mum.

She should have a calm and kind eye, small pointed ears with tips that turn in slightly, and a strong set to her neck. Have you got any photos?

"Emma has been handled every day since she was born and is very very friendly. She will lead on a halter and lead rope and also by hand alone with a finger in the head collar. She has been loaded 3 times in a horsebox too and loads easily, without mum too.
Sarina has a wonderful temperament and it was for that reason I bought her originally. She hasnt a bad bone in her body. Shes a real people horse and hopefully all that has rubbed off in Emma.
From what I see already Emma will be very easy to break and back, as she wants to learn all the time and follows me around her paddock, always inquisitive and loves grooming. Dont know what else I can say except that Im sure she will make a lovely friendly riding horse in the future."

He sent me pictures of her as a foal, at 3 months etc. Sent me a few he took the other day for me, only one of her standing still as she is clearly following him in the other ones! Lol.

Hope that link works! I'm not sure how she is supposed to look at that age and also know a bad picture can create faults that aren't there!
What do you think of her (if link worked lol)
 
She sounds very sweet natured which is a definate plus!

Do you know her breeding?

She is fuzzy and not exactly stood to show her conformation off to its best advantage in that picture which is not too helpful. Its impossible to tell from a picture, but she looks really tiny in that pic lol Has he said how big she is? When i saw pictures of my girl she was just all legs lol. Her neck looks a little short in that pic, but she is bending towards the camera which could explain that. I'd say go and have a look at her, check all her papers, take lots of pics and then give it some thought before you decide. She looks to have some faults (not going to pick her apart on a public forum!!) but like i said, the pic is not the best for judging conformation and a bad pic can make a good horse look very bad and a good pic can make a bad horse look good so i never trust that 100%, you need to see pics from all angles really.

He told me she was born from his registered mare SARINA-H. She has Wessel in her lineage. The Sire was FABE-348. SARINAS dad, (Emma's grandad) is TSJIPKE-399.
He attached bloodlines, papers etc but they don't mean much to me :\ Lol.

He hasn't said what height she is atm but did say she is expected to make around 16/16.1 hh. She isn't actually one yet, she is one on the 25th of June so still has lots of growing to do I think.

I can check out conformation faults etc once there and obv would have her vetted etc was also wondering if she looks typical to a friesian youngster - ie do you think she will turn out a nice friesien? Again, know it is difficult to tell from one picture :\

Im nowhere near experienced enough to say how she will turn out, hopefully Maiko or someone else more experienced can give you more input on that. It sounds like she is bi-boek registered though which is fine, but if you are buying her for breeding i would personally go for a fully registered friesian, but that is entirely your decision and there is nothing wrong with a bi-boek friesian.

Regarding how she looks, I can only compare her to my mare when i got her at a similar age (well, about 4 months older, but near enough), this was her shortly after she arrived. Bear in mind that my mare is more towards the modern type whereas the filly will be more the heavy, baroque type if she is by Wessel so they wont have exactly the same body type.

Its a shame you cant see the filly without all her fluff, she will look a lot different with a summer coat!! To be honest, it really depends what you are buying a friesian for. I bought mine mostly as an allround riding horse, but also with the idea that i may want to breed a friesian foal or two from her so FPS registered by an approved stallion and breeding was the priority for me. It took me about 2 years to find my girl... Its a minefield friesian shopping!!!

I am confused, could she be bi-boek registered with a FPS passport?

The FPS issue the passport whether the horse is registered in the bi-boek or not. Usually the term "full fps passport" implies that the horse is fully registered, not bi-boek, but if she is by Wessel then she cant be fully registered as he is not an approved stallion. Unless she has the original dutch Wessel who was approved in the previous generations and that is what you noticed? It is confusing having two stallions with the same name!! But, if she is by a stallion based in England she is bi-boek registered as there are no approved stallions in the UK. The easiest way to tell if you have a copy of her pedigree is to check if the sire has 3 numbers after his name (eg Una is by Brandus 345), the 2 numbers mean that he is approved.
 
Ok checked & it's Wessel 237 her dam has in her lineage, jeeezo isn't this confusing! Lol.
Hope I semi know what I'm talking about by the time Saturday comes!
 
Lol It is a nightmare!! I had a lot of help from people on a really good american forum when i was looking, it does help to have a second opinion on these things!!

I think you should go look at her, have a look at mum as well, and see if you fall in love :D Its impossible to tell anything from that picture really lol
