My pony lives out 24/7 but has developed an allergic breathing problem - possibly plant related and is now on ventipulmin.

The vet said it is not a steroid so should not increase his risk of lami.

What are people's experience of ventipulmin - does it generally work and how quickly. He is having it once a day as he only puffs when he is brought up to the yard and tacked up to be ridden and after he is ridden.

prob will get sht down for this but I have never found it to be v effective esp on ponies for some reason but a pony at our yard now gets benilyn chesty cough when his cough appears but it is always gone within a few days when we use this. the only thingyou have to watch is that chemists get a bit funny selling you it in any large quantities !!! Think they thought we were selling it on!!

Ventipulmin does the trck, but usually only in cases of copd (rao) and usually more effective in horses that have not had it before.

it is not steroidle but can and does become addictive so prolong usage is not advisable.

ha benilyn cough syrup does work.. we also did that.

gold label also do KOUGH SYRUP which also works.

He does not have a cough at all. Just laboured breathing and wheezing so more like asthma.

It is the first time he has had a breathing problem but we are at a new yard so perhaps something seasonal that was not in abundence at his old yard. Had been at new yard two months though before any problems started and then it has been intermitant.

You may find it works for a short while, but eventually he will stop responding to it. Inhaled steroids would probably be the best way forward, they work in the lungs and are not taken up systemically to any great degree so do not pose any laminitis risk, but will massively improve his breathing.

Mine is on Ventipulmin as has suspected RAO.. Just a wheezing/rattle in her windpipe. It has worked immediately on her, and seems to have done the trick, although she hasnt finished the course yet xx

My pony developed a dry cough due to pollen allergies - ventipulmin worked straightaway the first couple of times he needed it but it stopped working after then. I started using NAF Respirator which seemed to do the trick.

I have since moved away from the yard it started at and fingers crossed hasn't coughed or needed any medication since.

My pony was on ventipulmin for one winter when she develped COPD. Did seem to work, and she's fine now even wen stabled, so hasn't needed it for a few years.

I use Air Power - its a syrup that opens up the airways to allow them to breathe freely - i use it about an hour before i ride and its stop all that asthma type wheezing on my horse and lets him work properly. You can get it from www.horsehealthwessex.com its £18.00 for 500 ml but you only use 10ml a day. Its made by finishline products in America and its claimed its better than ventipulmin. I havent tried ventipulmin, but don't feel the need with this stuff. Good luck .

Thanks have ordered an Air power suringe to try out and if it work will get the syrup

Ventipulmin is pure rubbish and highly addictive!
Pkease DO NOT take your horse off a long period cure in a cold turkey fashion ... you can cause it vascular problems!!!

From personal experience: A QH breeder had a stallion that I was asked to approve with respect to possible breeding. I was told he was asmatic and had been on venti. for 3 years! I was certain from the first moment I saw him that he was not asmatic and told the breeder that the vascular system should be checked. It seemed that no less than 3 vets had pronounce the stud unfit (also for insurance purposes!!!) and asmatic; I got my homeopathic vet to have a look at him and his verdict was that he horse had moisture in his heart sack and this was restricting his breath!! Low and behold this was confirm by x-rays and after a 6 week homeopathic cure (and 3 years venti and antibiotics) all respiratory problems had disappeared.
The moral of the story ... get more than a 2nd opinion before you give ventipulmin ... it IS a cortisome drug and very addictive and will cause resistance after a period of time!!! There are beter 'medicines' or natural 'cures' available.

are there any homeopathic vets in the south west? or somebody that could assess my horse who has breathing problems. ie. noisy breathing, inflammed lungs. he has been looked at numerously by vets but just wondered if there would be anybody else i could consult local to me

mine has had ventipulmin several times and been effective. but last time she developed a cough and high resps ventipulmin wasn't very effective so was put on inhalers one like ventipulmin the other steroid these were more effective. also more cost effective than ventipulimn. would guess depnds on the root cause of the problem has your been scoped and had a wash done? because if there is any infection ventipulmin wont work!

I am trying to give him Airways plus from global herbs but the problem is that the global herbs stuff is just unpalatble that he won't touch the food if I put the recommended dose in!

there is crushed spearmint that is supposed to be quite good at masking the taste of undesirables. they sell it in robinsons catologue for £2.70.
