Had the vet out to check and test but he showed no sensitivity he said it might be causing lameness as it was close to the laminae possibly old abcess.Horse had suspected tendon damage as well to confuse things.Tonight I found heat in the hoof which is the first indication that there is something else going on apart from obvious lameness.I have cleaned hoof and poured some disinfectant in and he stamped his foot so Im thinking that he has injured the sole. The Tendon settled down and the vet thought he had just pulled a few fibres or knocked it.I will have a scan if vet recommends but we were undecided what was causing lameness. The farrier is out tomorrow for regular check up so thats good timing. What will I need for poulticing I would imagine farrier will want to drain the area.

Hi Cellie

To poulitce you'll need animal lintex, vet wrap, nappies and Gaffer tape.

Nappies are the best invention ever as far as I'm concerned

I'm a dab hand as my boy has bad feet (Typical TB) and nappies help draw out the infection and hold the poulitce in place so you can bandage. I also put Vet gamagee under the Nappie if its on his sole for the same reason and extra padding.
You need to gaffer tape even if staying in - just to stop the banage getting wet or worn.
My Farrier is brilliant, but I always get the the vet to dig mine out, just in case there is something else wrong and its not an abcess.
Good luck

My TB loves getting acscesses - I use all of the above plus a plastic shopping bag over the nappy to make it a bit more waterproof.

Takes me about 1 min (+ soaking time) to take off old poultice and put on new one. Sometimes I soak the foot in a tub of warm water and epsom salts to help draw out the abscess - it really just depends.

Its not Ollie again is it?

Oh yes how did you guess. Its not abcess the farrier trimmed his feet and couldnt find a thing. The heat had all gone by the time he turned up.Ive phoned vet yet again and he will probably have to have more scans and xrays plus nerve blocks .I think we have covered everything by then .Hes had his knees scanned and xrayed plus lower leg in June.He did go crazy in the field and raised some heat and swelling around tendon 2 weeks ago vet checked it out and thought it would be fine so didnt bother scanning. The insurance will be up to max soon so we wont have any more options. You dont want another tb to add to yours do you I cant take much more

I have already maxed out the insurance on one of mine ... the other one I have been told nothing can be done about so basically everything on him has been excluded except his tail. Dont think I can afford another expensive TB no matter how pretty Ollie is.

Sometimes the heat can go even though the abscess hasnt burst. My anglo likes getting abscesses in the coronet band - this means that the coronet band is a little warm but the hoof isnt. Once I have poulticed though, the gunk usually comes out the side (and it is quite disgusting) and then he has a nice big hole in his hoof that takes 9 months to grow out.

Hi.. echo that above on poulticing materials but could i add my latest discovery.... silage tape instead of gaffer tape. Silage tape is the wide black tape used by farmers to seal up the large haylage bales. It's stronger, more waterproof, more flexible and much much cheaper. A 3inch roll costs about £3 from any agricultural merchants.
