After losing daughters horse last september after prolonged lameness we have been debating whether to get new horse as daughter doing a levels off to uni sept 13 plus v limited budget after spending a small fortune on previous horse.
Have been keeping an eye out and saw a lovley 5 yr old irish x tb for sale. Backed last summer ,jumping nicely and lovley paces. On paper sounds a genuine straight forward type and genuine reason for sale.
Owner leaving uni to work abroad. seen lots of photos and videos and we like what we see.
However she has not hacked out yet so my plan is to have her on livery nearby to have access to facilities for a few months then bring her home to hack out with my elderlry mare as nanny. Dont want her back yet as old mare has had the winter off and dont want to upset her with new horse as cant go out together.
Daughter is v excited but it has also triggered off lots of tears for horse that we lost so feeling a bit stressed ,plus this is first time back in the saddle. Hoping its right,do my plans sound reasonable,or am i rambling....

I'm no expert, but the not hacked would worry me.

Normally when someone breaks a horse they do hack it, all mine were. Certainly if you are selling you would at least do a bit.

If you only wanted to compete I wouldn't worry. But as you mention the horse would be expected to hack in the future I would be careful.

It could be that they have tried and its a total nutter.

Just a thought.

I would also recommend caution here, have they a GOOD reason that they never hacked, I would at least expect a horse to walk down the drive/ out of the yard/ round a few fields etc not just be going in an arena.
I will never buy one that I could not do one of the above with while trying it, if they are on a very busy road at least go down to it so you can see how the horse reacts to traffic and make sure it will actually walk out of the arena without napping.

My horse is only 2yrs old and has been out on walks with me, they must of taken it out of the yard for a walk at least? Id ask them to take it out of the yard and see what it does if you go to view it.

My only concern is that your daughter will have enough time once she's gone off to uni next year, would you be looking to loan the horse out or keep riding it yourself?

Back from viewing which went well on the whole. Nice mare ,right type, size ,good confirmation and paces and daughter liked her.v responsive ride despite being young however large sarcoid on belly bigger than described and the no hacking does concern me. i have my very sensible head on which is not normal ,am speaking to vet tomorrow and will be cautious. That said i think she has the potential to be a lovley little horse. i think some of the lack of real excitement is that shes not our old horse. Daughters first time in the saddle for 6 months and first canter in a year so that was good..

Deb, you could ask on here for people's experiences of sarcoids. There are plenty of lovely horses for sale without sarcoids (or other things). perhpas you should look around at what else is available. you don't want to buy yourself more problems after the year you have just had.

Did you try and take the horse out of the yard? has she really not been anywhere but the schooling ring?

Oh I feel for you. We lost my daughters horse in Nov. Have tried quite a few now and its so hard as though some have been 'very nice' they dont compare to the one we lost, she was quite unique.

D is trying hard not to compare but she cant help it. She is actualy going for a 2nd viewing of one she tried on Sat, quite a bizarre looking ISH type, 5 yo, broken in Oct, lovely lovely nature but its body needs to do some serious filling out to match its long chunky legs. Perhaps thats what we need - to go from the unique to the bizarre. The horse she saw on Sat had only ever hacked out, went over its first jump the day D tried it.

I would be wary of a horse that had never hacked if thats what i was planning to do, the road is the most vunerable place ever to be. If you decide against this horse perhaps your D could have some riding lessons in the interim. I think it has helped my D no end.

Also a sarcoid on the belly is in a prime place for getting knocked and having fly probs.

Good luck whatever you decide

Mixed feedback on sarcoids ,some say dont touch with a barge pole others more optimistic, it is bigger and more vulnerable than expected .
As for the hacking i would be far happier even if she had been walked out in hand as my mini has done since a yearling.
Am veering towards a no this time but we are getting clearer about what we want. Unfortunatley i dont have a huge budget at my disposal or will be divorced ,think i will just keep looking about as i dont want to start off with issues as no doubt i will find some more along the way..
