My horse is currently on box rest and is getting very bored. He is in an indoor barn and all the other horses go out for the day so he doesnt see anyone! I have given him a feed ball and a likit , but they're eaten in about 5 minutes.

Anyone get any ideas what else I can give him to take the boredom away? x

My horse is on box rest at the moment as well, i put turnip/apple/carrot onto baler twine and hang it up, also i put 2 hay nets up and then 2 buckets on the floor with hay in and then although she has an automaic water feeder I fill a bucket with water and put some apples in it.

Maybe get a stable mirror, can buy them off ebay i think.

Also when you are at the yard give as much fuss and TLC as possible to him, lots of attention etc..

Good luck.. I know how you are feeling...

Thanks thats a really good idea. Bless him I feel so bad cause I am in such a rush in a morning to get him done I feel like I am not giving him as much fuss and attention. Going to spoil him tonight with a nice vege kebab (on bailing twine)! :-)

The weather was so torrential last night he didnt even get his hand grazing, so is thoroughly fed up today.

Got the vet coming back on Thursday so I am hoping she can say he can go out. Going to have to sedate him as he is going to go loop de loop when I let him go.

Beemer is on box rest too at the moment and loves having a suede on baler twine hanging from the stable door. Suedes are great as they take a bit longer for them to get through than apples/carrots/lickits.

When my horse was one box rest i found suedes to be the best for him too but by the end of his 8 weeks he didnt like them anymore lol! He liked his lickit too! A stable mirror is very good but make sure you get an equestrian one as normal would break! Prob obvious but thought i woiuld mention!

I don't know why your horse is being box rested so ignore me if this is dim, but I made an electric fenced grass pen for one of mine when she was box rested...it got her out and in the open air, and she grazed happily. It was only slighty larger than stable sized as she wasn't meant to run around...and I moved it every day. I put her in there while I mucked her out so it didn't cost me any more time.
Also - if you have another stable with a different view, or different smells, that can keep them entertained.

Thats a good idea with the pen. He has pulled ligaments around coffin joint and cannot do tight circles, sudden movements etc. So not sure if he would go silly being outside and ping around a pen, undoing all of the rest so far!

Think will wait and see what vet says on Thursday and then make a plan. Suedes it is for the time being though!!!!!
