My horse lost his shoe and has bruised his sole farrier had a look today and said to hot poultice over weekend as its quite a wide spread bruise but that he didn't want to dig it out, no puncture wound and no abcess, but although my boy is a wimp he is so sore really lame, and just wondered if anyone had any old faithful poultices to help with bruising? Thanks

It sounds like his soles are thin, to bruise so badly so easily. Thin soles are usually caused by too much sugar and starch in the diet, and/or mineral deficiencies or imbalances. Healthy feet are the best defence against hoof problems.

Is it possible that he trod on his shoe after he pulled it off? One of our horses trod on someone else's lost shoe whilst hunting last weekend. Was crippled lame on Monday but is now sound today. I just used Animalintex as a poultice.

I think by the shape of the bruise he stood on a large stone, he is still very sore and not really weight bearing at all, despite putting a poultice on for the last couple of days no pus coming out at all

I think if that sore after a few days I would get vet to xray and check for a fracture, although sometimes cracks dont show up straight away and you have to re xray after a couple of weeks, still better to check. There is a horse at the yard I am on landed on a big stone and bruised her foot badly but she didnt improve after a few days, xrays confirmed she had split her pedal bone right up the middle!

I also think I would put horse on box rest to be safe.

Agree that if it is a bruise you do not need to poultice. Box rest and x-ray if not better in a week. Bruises can take a long time to get over though - months in some cases. At least the ground is soft for you at the moment.
