very confused breeding owner

HI I no this is gona sound nutts my maiden mare is now 3 weeks late but 2 weeks ago i was un sure i got my vet out to check her over saying i was a nervous 1st time breeder. He came out a said oh dear i think somethings wrong ie foals dead. I broke my heart had her scanned and there it was a tiny little dead foal. Lots of blood went away inconculsive. Vet came out again and said shes bagging up let her get rid her self which i can see the logic that was last thurs. The week has gone by and nothing but i sware there is movement more than just her breathing!! Tonight the vet rang the last blood test we have been waiting for says shes still in foal !!!!!
HELP what is going on !!!!!!!!!!!

Gosh - what an emotional rollercoaster for you!

Did you have a 3 month scan? It might be possible that your mare was carrying twins?

ETA - just re-read and seen that you had a scan two weeks ago. I would go back to the vet and ask him to clarify what is going on! Is he an equine specialist/stud vet?
 
Don't know what's going on, but I'd certainly get myself another vet. Hope it all turns out right for you and the mare - you must be so anxious about it all. Good luck.
 
Jeopardy, I wouldn't hesitate - get yourself another vet/opinion, as soon as you possibly can! I've just posted on another thread to say how critical it was to us after a rather traumatic birth of a very big foal to have a really expert stud vet giving our mare quality care (the vet who attended just post-birth was not experienced). Ask on this forum, or locally, but it sounds as though its <u>really</u> urgent that you find a very experienced stud vet who understands whats going on for your mare. They can then either reassure you or advise you on treatment - as everyone else has said, this just NOT sound right! Don't worry about offending anyone at this point, the key thing is the welfare of your mare and (possibly) foal ..... Good luck and keep us posted
 
This happened to me 3 yrs ago
My mare had twins one had clearly been dead along time and was perfect but the size of a jack russell
The other foal was perfectly formed and correct size but unfortunatly was also born dead.
If you are very very lucky yours might be born alive I would have her indused straight away as she is full term before the other foal poisons it
BTW mare easily got straight back in foal
 
I had her scanned before she came home from the stud and then when i got her back to check it came home !! Then i left her to it it was only because she didn't seem to be growing right i got the vet out !! have no idea whats going on and the vet said lets wait and see !!!!!
 
thank you all so much i have been through hell and back the thing is it all feels like its my fault cos it was my 1st time i was nervous and in trusted my mare with a friend of mine to have her and keep her with other foaling mares.. I've been busy hunting and careing all winter for my other 6 horses although i rang a lot and sent my grandad up to see her i havn't been up the last time i spent any time other than looking over the hedge was at x mas when she was glowing. I returned just before she was due and after my friends saying she was fab she wasn't her hair had all fallen out and she was looking very skinny with a big tummy ( not very preg mare big) Any who it was just rain scalled and lack of food shes been home 3 weeks and looking much better. So i am to blame too could the foal be small because she wasn't fed could this be why vet said dead when its now riggling like mad !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
Also blood tests came back that she was healthy no poisoning in blood and all test for virus came back negative too i have spoken to the vet and he says that he didn't help with the theory that the foal is dead but he could be wrong !!!!!!! he says lets wait and see and if there are too the dead one doesn't seem to be poisoning her !!!!!
 
Jeopardy, would just really repeat what we have all said above - please get yourself a second opinion from a really experienced stud vet - none of this sounds right, and at least if you consult another vet you can be more confident if they confirm what your current vet is telling you. (Nothing very useful by the sound of it)
 
unlike cattle and some other animals, horses do not carry on carrying the foals if something goes wrong - and the will definately give birth if the foal dies as their body will naturally flush it out so this is definately NOT right. If I were you I would get a different vet out and one that is very experienced at stud work and get a second opinion!!
 
If I were you I certainly wouldn't be waiting till Monday - I would be having the vet out tomorrow.

At the end of the day, if the foal is dead it should have been dispelled by now and if it hasn't then the mare needs veterinary attention immediately. If the other vet was wrong and she IS still in foal then the vet will be able to say within reasonable doubt that all is 'well'...personally if I were worrying about a situation such as this then whilst I know a weekend callout is expensive, if the mare ran into problems and I lost her then I would never forgive myself for not acting sooner.
