Brief history: 20 yo, previous injury to shoulder from a fall which results in frequent trapped nerves on her left side causing her to be shuffly until the nerves are released. Apart from this no previous leg problems.

Wednesday horse shod.

Thursday came in from field lame, i walked her on the lunge in the arena to try and get her to walk it off/ get used to her shoes.

Friday still sore, i noticed that when she is moving, her left fore is coming up short and not swinging straight forwards (swings slightly to the right)

She spent sat- tues on 1 hour in the field am and pm with box rest in between, legs clayed and bandgaged and lots of stretching and carrott exercises.

Yesterday pm- vet out (and I really love and respect my vet) he thinks it could be one of three things:
1. Suspensory Ligament
2. Fetlock injury
3. Pedal (sp) bone

This was due to the following reasons:
When lunged she is worse on the right rein, though lame left fore. (suggesting issue is along the outside of her body)

Much sounder on the left rein (1/8th lame) (even in trot where last week she had been so lame in walk)

He found a small swelling at the top of the fetlock (about the size of my thumbnail) which I hadnt noticed before.

When walking around the yard, she is prefering to walk on the soft grass rather than gravel.

Has anyone had experience in any of these???????

Does my horses symptoms sound like it could be any of them??

As there is a marked improvement in her walking since last Friday, I have decided to continue the rest for another week, when the vet will return for another look. (fingers crossed she will imporve during this time!)

If not we will take her to the practive for nerve blocking (though vet did express that she is such a needle shy horse that he would have to be extreamly careful- Gem will not like it one bit and this is her only bad trait)

He dosnt think it could be her shoulder, as shoulder problems are so rare in horses (though Gem has a weak shoulder due to the fall in the past) but was unable to advise any more without the nerve blocks being done.

I want to get a physio/chiro out in the meantime to see what their opinion is.... but dont want it to appear that I am not listening to my vet as i think what he has suggested is reasonable.....??

UUUHHH!! sorry guys for going on... i just wish my girl could speak and let me know what part helps!

If anyone out there has has similar movement issues with their horse, id love to hear what it turned out to be....

Thanks everyone, CASE of wine each for getting this far!!

my tb got white line disease (WLD) and i didn't realise how serious it could get, it got 2/3 of the way up the outside of his off fore and he became slightly lame on the right rein in trot

after all winter off without shoes so i could treat the WLD, he is just coming back to schooling and so far so good

doesn't sound related to your horses condition, it was just the difficulty finding the cause problem and the random (to me) nature of it that made me reply

hope your girl gets well soon

Thank you Teabiscuit. :-)

I have to be honest as I have never heard of that condition, but its interesting to know that it effects the outside of the leg. Did your horse swing his front leg slightly inwards?

x

My horse has exactly the same symptoms!!!
Popping her to the vets 2moro, so will let you know how it goes!

Really, with the leg moving towards the inside??

It is soooo fustrating! Will the vet be doing nerve blocking?

My girl is actually dangerous to inject, we just about manage her yearly jab! The thought of blocking her is a scarey thought and I could tell my vet agreed with me last night!

I hope it all goes well tomorrow and PLEASE let me know how you get on and what her diagnosis is! x

Everything apart from the leg moving inwards!

Not sure what the vet has planned yet, appointment isnt until late 2moro, but will let you know the outcome!

Very frustrating though!!

Ehmmm....did your vet check your girlies feet with hoof testers?? Could be shoe related rather than higher up as we had a similar problem a few weeks ago which ultimately translated into heel pain. The leg swinging thing could be her trying to land on a more comfy part of her foot. My girl did the same on the lunge too. Worth checking out....

Hi Scotsmare, thanks for your post.

Yes he did hoof pinch as he also thought initially it may be her new shoes..... but absolutly nothing!

She once lost a shoe and could barely walk- she looked as if she had broken her leg... so is a very sensitive kind and at the pressure he tested her toes with i am fairly sure it dosnt stem from her feet.

the only place she is sensitive with at the moment is her shoulder.... i have pushed, prodded every little lump on her legs and nothing!

it is a real headscratcher!!

oh dear it really isn't happening for you and Gem is it?? When is the physio out?? The shouder would make her short and if she is in pain on the shoulder I would definitely get a 'professional' out to her. Not saying the vet isn't but tbh they cannot be perfect at everything whereas a physio/chiro/osteo is only trained for these types of injuries. Which vets are you using?? xx <<<<hugs>>>>

cant say had same syptoms but did have some odd symptoms like looking very lame at trot in field then trot up and ride and be abolutly fine.but mine is really not great with neddles will sometimes give sedlin before an IV injection and she had to be nerve blocked my vet was concered about this but as it was in her leg i dont think she expected it and the vet managed to do it having said that i dont think we would have managed a second as ahe didn't want the vet near her leg after that so was very pleased ahe was sound on the first. so you might be lucky and it suprise her? by the way mine had non specific heel pain
gd luck

Just thought id post a little update on my girl...

I just had the farrier out who too is adement that it is in her shoulder! He prodded and poked everywhere with no reaction and when he touched her shoulder she nearly flatpacked him!

He has taken off her hoof pads to insure she is as level as she can be... just waiting for a physio now for their opinion...

As she is getting better with rest, its got to be muscular??? So either shoulder or suspensory...... xx

Hello, just to give you a update on my mare.
Been to the vets, and he thinks she has low grade laminitis, induced from the farriers trimming her feet too short! So she is on bute and box rest, also got farrier coming out to put on bar shoes.
Then ive got to have her feet xrayed.
He told me I may not ever be able to ride her again, so im gutted at the mo!

Ohh Shell!! <<<<<HUGS>>>>>>>

My vet also initialy suspected laminitis as she had a raised pulse but after seeing her move he changed his mind.

Dont start thinking the worse (i know it is easier said then done as I am the most guilty for doing this) but just take each day as it comes and that may not be the outcome and you will have spent time worrying unnecessarly(sp!)

I have also been told of stories where people have boxrested and buted for 10 days and the horse returns sound... so there is always hope! But i do understand the emotions atm... up and down... im just the same!

I have the physio hopefully coming next week (she is a very busy lady- which is a good sign!) and I cant wait to hear what she thinks!

Keep in touch and let us know how it all goes! xx
