Brief history: 20 yo, previous injury to shoulder from a fall which results in frequent trapped nerves on her left side causing her to be shuffly until the nerves are released. Apart from this no previous leg problems.
Wednesday horse shod.
Thursday came in from field lame, i walked her on the lunge in the arena to try and get her to walk it off/ get used to her shoes.
Friday still sore, i noticed that when she is moving, her left fore is coming up short and not swinging straight forwards (swings slightly to the right)
She spent sat- tues on 1 hour in the field am and pm with box rest in between, legs clayed and bandgaged and lots of stretching and carrott exercises.
Yesterday pm- vet out (and I really love and respect my vet) he thinks it could be one of three things:
1. Suspensory Ligament
2. Fetlock injury
3. Pedal (sp) bone
This was due to the following reasons:
When lunged she is worse on the right rein, though lame left fore. (suggesting issue is along the outside of her body)
Much sounder on the left rein (1/8th lame) (even in trot where last week she had been so lame in walk)
He found a small swelling at the top of the fetlock (about the size of my thumbnail) which I hadnt noticed before.
When walking around the yard, she is prefering to walk on the soft grass rather than gravel.
Has anyone had experience in any of these???????
Does my horses symptoms sound like it could be any of them??
As there is a marked improvement in her walking since last Friday, I have decided to continue the rest for another week, when the vet will return for another look. (fingers crossed she will imporve during this time!)
If not we will take her to the practive for nerve blocking (though vet did express that she is such a needle shy horse that he would have to be extreamly careful- Gem will not like it one bit and this is her only bad trait)
He dosnt think it could be her shoulder, as shoulder problems are so rare in horses (though Gem has a weak shoulder due to the fall in the past) but was unable to advise any more without the nerve blocks being done.
I want to get a physio/chiro out in the meantime to see what their opinion is.... but dont want it to appear that I am not listening to my vet as i think what he has suggested is reasonable.....??
UUUHHH!! sorry guys for going on... i just wish my girl could speak and let me know what part helps!
If anyone out there has has similar movement issues with their horse, id love to hear what it turned out to be....
Thanks everyone, CASE of wine each for getting this far!!
