Brief field poll at the yard showed I wasn't the only one who has had run in's. So we are on top of Ranmore and come the summer it has a lot of walkers/cyclists/riders. Vast majority get on really well. However, we have a very steep single track road (road being the operative word) which these wretched cyclists use as a speed track. So despite the fact that it is a public road, with 2 way traffic, they use it to race down.

I stopped using that road to hack back up having nearly lost my horse when he had 2 cyclists flying towards him, found other friends have stopped doing it too and now found that people who would use that road to drive are also stopping doing this due to a couple of near misses - it is a narrow road.

So, where would I start to raise this with the appropriate authorities? find a way of stopping them? and by cyclists I am not talking happy day out, we are talking about the full gear/speed guys..

I'll pass this on to my husband who is a lycra clad wierdo too!

Seriously though the only 'offence' they comit is 'wanton or furious cycling', a massively outdated piece of legislation if ever there was but still valid if you can a) get the local Police interested and b) catch the buggers!

Start by reporting this on the BHS website where they have facility to report all manner of incidents. I'd then report it to the police and at least get them to create an incident log, someone else may have had problems and a better idea of who they are., I'd also have a ring round of local cycling clubs, again they may have some ideas.

Finally, always carry a whip preferably a long one, get my drift?

Having had exactly the same problem as the OH, I don't find this that funny. We were calmly walking up a stony, narrow, twisty bridleway, when two cyclists came flying down completely out of control. Both horses spun and bolted downhill, one of the cyclists fell and his bicycle kept rolling after us, it was a miracle no one was seriously hurt. If this is a common occurence it really makes the path unusable which is really unfair to other users (which could include other cyclists and walkers).

If you can find out where they originate from and then put the case to them as a whole it often helps.

My horses are used to bikes as my BF rides with us but always always shout hi or something at the cyclists and if you draw them in with conversation then you can mention that the horses are nervy.

I have one of the largest road cycling stores in the country near me so I can always go in and ask to speak to the team manager or even ask for it to be mentioned to the cyclists?

If they ride for a team the name is on the jersey or down the leg.

If they belong to a club and are doing time trials and such like, they 'should' and the key word here is 'should' have permission from the appropriate authorities, so there may not be a whole lot you can do.

Some cyclists do my head in! As you say majority are fine but we too have a single track road going downhill and I was riding my 4 yo on his first solo hack (the road forms part of a lovely 20 min loop) and as a car was coming past us a cyclist whizzed between us and the car! I could not believe it. Luckily my lad is so very good and didn't move a muscle but it could have been v nasty. I did shout out some obscenities after him though!!

speak to the council and the police, I dislike cyclists as a rider and as a driver.
Make as much fuss as you can, involve the local paper also.

Yep I'm with you on that, there is seldom a week goes by without a radio program like jeremy vine having one on bleating about how dangerous the roads are for them, then dont totaly disregard other users!!! have lights on at night have a little interest in the highway code ie oneways give ways, trafic lights, pedestian crossings..... high time they had insurance and number plates....

I did talk to Surrey County Council last winter, as some prattish bike club organised a race ride through Ranmore when it was very wet. Result, completely ruined the bridlesways for walkers AND riders. So they come out once, ruin and the rest of us who use them consistently then can't have access. However, it turns out that this clubs only have to tell the council if they are riding a race - but if I stop them and they claim "its only a trial" then they do not have to report it - which means that when I complained about the state the race left the byways, the council could do nothing as they had no idea who it was! So guess who will NOT be polite this year and WILL be demanding the club name if this happens again.

But seriously I know its not just the riders, the local house owners must hate them too - someone put an unofficial sign up saying "beware cyclists" - it was heavily defaced (not by me!) but the resulting commentary was funny.

I will take on your idea about starting to complain and get others too as well... when I say its an accident waiting to happen, I am not exaggerating...oh the idiots were still out cycling on "road closed" and icy roads too.

they really annoy me when we come to traffic lights and the lights are clearly on red (stop) yet they sneak over. WTF do they not realise that the lights are for them aswell or even worse they go onto the pavement and miss the lights. I do despise most cyclists.

As for when we are out riding, they come so close, and the bikes are so quiet they make no attempt to make their presence know, the number of times i have told people off!
