After losing my GSD in June, my mother and I have decided to take the plunge again and I am being home checked for a rescue lurcher... have not arranged a time and date yet however I am very nervous / excited.

So crossed fingers and vibes would be really appreciated.

Also what on earth should I expect! Will they want my inside leg measurements?

Well when I was home checked they mainly wanted to see that the garden was securely fenced, that I had considered what owning a greyhound (in my case) was like and how it was different to owning other breeds of dogs, how often it would be walked, whether the dog would be left for long periods of time...

I think that was about it, they never home checked me again once they had done it the first time although I have moved house seven times since

Ah you see I never wasted time with housework

I do remember waffling on the first time about not thinking a dog had had a proper walk unless it had been out for an hour or so - of course greyhounds need a 20min whizz around, so that was a waste of time trying to impress her

Henry's homecheck was to check the fence in the backyard, and they gave me a bit of advice on dog proofing where I planned for him to sleep (not that he actually slept there in the end) and it took all of about ten minutes

Good luck!

I did housework and everything for my homecheck and they never even looked in the house!!

They gave me Max but I haven't forgiven them for all that wasted housework.......

I have a chest infection at the moment and your comments just made me laugh so much I thought I was going to die!

Think I will get mum on the old house work malarchy!

Oooh, well done and good luck, and I suppose I give you my gracious CC pardon for not going for another GSD

Thank you! I will always have one foot firmly in the GSD camp, such wonderful dogs.

I wonder if I know enough about the breed, I have read up on them but they seem to go from lazy (GH) to real high energy (GH x collie). This ones owner however died and it was only the owner and the dog in the house so he is used to a quieter life. I think they may want some of the fencing in the garden attended to as it is only about 4 foot, but that is not impossible!

I think you are absolutely right Gladioli, lurchers can be a multitude of things - the two I have had were like chalk and cheese

So it very much depends on the individual dog - I will keep my fingers crossed for you!

I think they will probably want 6 foot fencing all around the garden if that is possible..
