A friend just sent me this link: fugly horse

Brilliant reading (if rather trenchant). A lot of it is US-specific, but so much is also applicable here - basically, don't breed from animals with bad conformation/chronic problems! There is someone I know who is planning to breed from a straight-shouldered, roached back mare with navicular problems - I wish to God that she would read this blog.

Thanks for posting that - it's kept me riveted for the last 30 mins - particularly the thread about the indescriminate breeding of genetically damaged horses.
 
"Nest" - neck runs pretty much straight into the front legs due to the extreme lack of a chest and/or the fact the neck is just set on super low. Neck+chest="nest."
 
Wow, how brave is this woman! Have to agree with just about everything she says really. While we're on the subject of mares with awful conformation what about stallions.

I'ts always apalled me how many Arabs are kept entire, more than any other breed in this country, on the assumption theyr'e good enough to breed from. Does nothing for the reputation of the breed at all or the quality.

it does pose the question very well whether certain horses would be bred from or blue unicorns used as stallions if they weren't capable of producing 'spots' as she phrases it

same in regards to the arab comment above

so if it's a non-arab, non-spots normal brown horse with no 'cute' white bits or an interesting blue eye or whatever would it be bred from - probably not as perhaps fewer mugs around in regard to non-spotted horses

interesting also that the fashion for coloured horses isn't exclusive to here but also is in the USA
 
It's an excellent site. And talking of Arabs I google imaged Namusca to see what the fuss was about - eeeekkk! How gross is that!!! Apparently the owners think she is 'exotic'... Plain fugly if you ask me.
 
very interesting site. I do wonder about some people when it comes to breeding. Out of the 3 mares we have owned I wouldn't breed from any of them, especially Honey with her navicular and DJD even though she is well put together.
 
And I am in agreement with all of it.

Examine your reasons for breeding and put yourself in your foal's place - for the next ten years - and then decide whether or not to go ahead. Remember you might breed a fugly one and then what will its future hold?

Interesting and oh,so true! There seem to be less and less horses with good conformation around these days and no wonder! Breeding is not a quick way to make some money or a quick fix for a hormonal mare. It can just lead to so much heartache when a fugly is bred. Sadly, bad and ill thought out breeding looks set to continue and any good conformation will just get diluted even further. Sad.

I know this is an American site - but are we as bad? I seem to be seeing more and more truly dreadful horses advertised as having 'stallion potential' or 'would make good broodmare'...especially if they happen to have some white patches...
