My friend who I share with text me to say that our suspicions are now confirmed- someone is definitely using our NEW saddle when we are not there. GRRRR

We were pretty sure this was the case before so we removed the girth and stirrup irons and leathers and locked them in our box each day. Whoever it is is now putting their own stirrups etc on and leaving them next to our saddle (the cheek!).The box is full with no extra room, and taking the saddle home is not practical as we share it and use on different days.
Does anyone know of a way to secure the saddle to the rack?Is there a bike lock, for example, thin enough to fit through the little D rings on the front?

I know you can buy actual saddle racks that lock - whether you could buy just the lock part I am not sure.
Have you had a word with the YO/YM? Would it be possible for them to store it somewhere else for a while and have a word with everyone on the yard about this? IMO you shouldn't have to resort to locking your saddle down in order to stop someone using it.

What about leaving a polite notice attached to saddle so please do not use. It would hopefully alert those who are using it to the fact you know, that you dont want it used and hopefully if they are halfway decent they should feel guilty enough to stop. the cheek of some people, honestly!

Failing that I am sure you can get very fine chains and a little padlock at a DIY store very easily

i'm saw i've seen before a t shape thing for padlocking saddle to a rack. i'll go and see if i find it on robinsons

Yes, you should be able to get a bike lock that is a steel cable rather than a chain. I would get a long one and pass it through one front D ring under the flap and through the rear D on the same side, under or round the cantle, through other rear D and back through other front D. Then secure it to the rack. The come with padlocks or combination locks.

Something like this:

What a bloomin cheek!

That's the thing, I really don't want to point fingers, but the YM is really the only person there during the day so it could easily be her using it for exercising. I just wanted to to sort it quietly without having 'the chat'. I'll look into those racks, thanks.

Empty the box so the saddle can fit in it (surely it's value is higher than some of the stuff kept in there?) or take the tack home, where it is safe and can't be used by others.

We used to chain our saddles and bridles up with those long bike chains, as said just pass through the d-rings or stirrups and the saddle rack. Should be enough to deter anyone and you can each have a key.

I think it is very cheeky to use anyone's equipment but even more so if it is the YM using liveries saddles

I do think you need to invest in one of the rack locks - have you confiscated their girth and stirrups....maybe if you did that would be able to find out who has been taken your saddle when they ask if you have seen their stuff

Thanks for all your ideas guys!

I'll look into the racks, and I'll also measure the D rings and see if I can find a thin enough cable to fit through.

I just hate people using my stuff, especially when its new! I don't borrow anyones stuff without asking - ever! And the sad thing is, if whoever it was had just asked, I would have loaned it to them. It just bloody cheeky

God I cannot believe someone has the cheek to use someone elses saddle! This just seems crazy - Who does that??

I would be pretty miffed to be honest and would speak up about it, I know you don't want to cause any trouble and it could even be the YO but still, it's not on really.

but going back you can get those saddle locks where you need a key to open up the lock and release the saddle out of.

Goodluck and let us know how you get on.x

I just put this message on the yard facebook site

" Hi guys, sorry to set a negative tone, but I just wanted to share something with you all. Lorna and I found a while ago that our saddle and numnah was being used, so we removed the numnah, stirrups and girth. Unfortunately this has not stopped the si...tuation as someone appears to be attaching their own stirrips to the saddle, leaving them next to it, and leaving our cover off, plus there are phantom scuff and dirt marks appearing. I hate having to even mention it as I don't want to offend anyone. Anyway, its a new saddle so we will be keeping an eye on this and if it doesn't stop we will be placing a lock on the rack. We can't take it home as we share it on different days. We're not scabby, so if you need a loan of something just ask! Thanks guys."

I hope that sounds ok.

Very polite

Not sure I would be.

Thats outrageous - someone using your saddle. Its one thing a bridle/headcollar/other stuff but a saddle is personal to the horse. It moulds to his and yours shape and apart from anything is a very expensive item.
I would be livid!

Koda I do think you have done the right thing by telling them the situation without pointing the finger and telling them what will happen if it doesn't stop. I hope who ever it is stops this it is totally unacceptable (imo)!
