Hi all,
My dad has a miniture JRT who has been really itching himself. Dad was worried so took him to the vets who prescribed steriods. They worked for a bit but were not great. He has tried Piriton too which wasnt the best and is now unfortunately going down the route of skin/blood tests as they think it could be an allergy.
As his belly is rather close to the ground (the dog's not my dads!!!

) his tummy is very red so maybe an allergy to grass?? or maybe caused from the scratching?
Just wondered if while we wait for the results to come back if there is anything that could relieve him a bit as it is getting the poor little thing quite down (again the dog and not my dad!!!

)
Would the Sulphur that I have read about in other posts help with this?

Thanks in advance!!

ooo I will be interested in any replies as my JRT is in exactly the same situation.
She has started her itchyness now and usually goes to vets and has a jab to calm everything down but then has another spell around sept/ october time

We have a pup which was very itchy, he had skin scrapes at the vets, which came back clear.

The vet recommended an oily diet supplement called Viacutan and also a shampoo called Epi-soothe, which can be bought online. We have also switched his food to Wafcol potato and salmon which has no grains and he gets a homeopathic grass pollen and house mite tablet three times a day. We are also avoiding the field we were taking him on to at the time the itching starts. My mum also bought some Nat-Pet which again is online that we put on when he is itching.

He has now almost completely stopped itching, we don't know which change has made the difference but we will gradually reintroduce things and see how he goes.

When I had an itchy horse to deal with, aloe vera gel was good for soothing the itches. I don't think it would do any harm to a dog.

is it only in terriers that this problem occurs

NO!

I have a GSD with a pollen-allergy aggravated atopia skin infection. He itches all the usual sweaty places - throat, ears, under-carriage, behind elbows and lower legs and feet.

We are using sulphur, anti-histamines, aloe vera gel on skin and Malaseb shampoo, among other things! Also a supplement called Bionic Biotic I read about on here.

Sam there is a sulphur thread a few topics down

He is OK at the mo as he is in the house recovering from an op.

I would look carefully at what the dog is being fed first. A change of commercial diet will often see an improvement, but you will probably have to change now and again.

Have had a few rescues that have this problem and I have found that in changing them to raw food the problem went away.

jrts are prone to skin problems. jelly has really sensitive skin (see frontline post) if a additive so muh as passes her lips she ends up bald. i feed her on a wheat free food (CSJ command performance 21) and use this on her http://www.ggequine.com/dog_shampoo.shtml. the horse one is also very good. basically you want to avoid anything that's going to strip natural oils.
hope some of this helps!

I have a jrt with bad skin . It can be diet related , you can try an exclusion diet with help from the vet . I went raw with my dog but it turned out it wasn't food related . My dog is now 17 yrs old and has been on steriods , antihistamines and been washed with malaseb(sp) for 14 yrs . My vet told me years ago that being on steriods would shorten his life abit , so dread to think how old he'd get to without steriods!! It is a right pain in the backside and I hope never to have a dog with this problem again . It has cost me a fortune over the years with many , many tests and the stuff from the vets . Plus trying every suggestion that anyone came up with because you never know which one might be the one that works . And to top it all off the dog is my bastard ex husbands that he dumped on me when we split saying he would always pay the vets fees etc . Guess what , nothing .

Well my JRT's itching had got worse just when hair was starting to grow back so took her to the vets today and vet thinks it is a grass allergy as looked at her records for last year and it is exactly around the same time june/july so gave her a steroid injection and it is already settling down
