My old chap (25yo) is terribly itchy right under his belly, more so around the girth area. He comes up to you and expects you to give him a jolly good scratching.
The vet said it could be a bit of sweetich! I have used sudocream but it did not work.
I washed it with warm water and head and shoulders at the week-end and still goes bonkers and wants a scratch.
I have now decided to use witch hazel and tea tree cream (from Tesco). His belly area is clipped as suggested by my other vet (I have two). Any other suggestions what I could use to make him less itchy… you should see the faces he pulls of shear delight. He does seem to have some sort of irritation underneath and is slightly bumpy. He even holds a leg up to beg! Such a character. I wonder if Naf D-ich or this new product range form Naf http://www.naf-equine.eu/uk/products/range.jsp?range_id=25 would help. He has a shavings bed on rubber matting and the wet is taken out every morning.
I would appreciate any suggestions. Many thanks.

My lad has had some serious bumps and been incredibly itchy in the last month, but he wasn't sweet about it and it made him very angry! I has the vet out but she said it could be loads of different things, including allergies, fungus or bacteria.

We think it's one of three things: a reaction to valerian, an allergy to alfalfa (as he was showing some gastro symptoms on that too) or rain scald but caused by him sweating in his rug, opening the pores and letting the bacteria in. The lumps were small, less than little fingernail size. Some have scabbed with a yellow crust. He still has some but they have gone down a lot and are no longer itchy.

Treatment wise we tried antibiotics but these didn't really do much. I then tried washing the itchy parts with an antimicrobial shampoo; I rugged him after with a cooler but he was even itchier the next day. So I started using keratex on him and left him unrugged. This seems to be helping. I have also used eqyss microtek gel which helps stop the itch, so I have alternated that and the keratex. Seems to be working but has been a trying time for us both!

I didn't try anything with the sole purpose of stopping the itch as I was worried that he might react to that as well, as there is a lot more in it than eqyss and keratex. Good luck with your itchy lad!

Washed a rug or girth or got something on there that might cause a reaction? Or anything in the field he could have rubbed on.
I'd be surprised if si if your weather is anything like ours. Mine has been fine since about oct. Too cold now to be something id think of?
