Very Lame - Danilon not working

Hi

My mare has been very lame since Friday evening and on my vet's instruction she's been on Danilon since Saturday morning.

I sent a video to him as he's not able to call out until tomorrow but he said from the video its definitely not laminitis but its definitely coming from her hoof. There is no heat or swelling anywhere on her leg either.

She's on box rest too but the Danilon hasn't made even a tiny bit of difference - have any of you ever come across lameness like this before?
 
If it is just one foot then the most likely cause is an abscess and danilon will not really make much different and may delay it coming out.

If she is that lame I would be very disappointed that the vet did not come out yesterday or today as it sounds like an emergency situation.

thank you for your reply - my farrier is out tomorrow for my other horse so he is going to test for an abscess

My vet is away and not back until tomorrow and she has a lot of history so I would rather him look at her
 
Likely pus in the foot and will be getting evermore painful for the horse. Any of the practice vets can see to a simple pus in the foot.

Don't they have a locum to cover emergencies when they need to go away, I couldn't cope without knowing a vet can get to me in an emergency, although in this case I would have got my farrier, or his locum as he was away for a few days, to come out yesterday to look at the foot.
I am sure your farrier will find the problem and it should quickly be resolved.

Don't think that's allowed under the code of conduct they operate under .
What would you do if the horse had a broken leg ?
I would go to a practise with a better cover .
 
If it's truly a one vet practice with no locum or emergency cover then, for your horse's sake, move to another practice!

I hope you're farrier can find something.

Personally for pus in the foot (if that's what it is) I'd sooner trust a farrier to accurately locate and sort the problem out.

I'd be very Pee'd off with your vets tho' - FFS if Danilon doesn't mask the lameness then there is obviously something wrong and I'd expect better service, not just the classic response of "the vet's away atm". Not good enough IMO.
 
So the vet said it was definitely coming from a hoof, which makes it very likely to be an abscess but to give Danilon??!! Is this an equine specialist!?


abscesses can need pain relief but not when they have only just developed and no one has yet even investigated for one. I hope he told you to poultice over the weekend too?

We have a local one man vet practice. He is a brilliant back specialist but a hopeless business man and, as any assistants only ever stay for a short time, I guess he is a poor manager as well. We use him for any potential back problems but use a different practice for everything else, especially emergencies.

It does sound like an abscess.

A vet telling from a video that a horse has not got Laminitis

I say change your vet.
 
I wonder if the OP is in mainland UK. If so, I think that a change of vet would be a good idea.

I agree, it does sound like an abscess. Hopefully the farrier will sort it.
