Little horse has finally gone into the summer fields and he's never had any lami or anything but I want to be clued up as possible about the implications of lush grass.

He's out from 7:30 in the morning and is brought in any time between 2 and 7 in the afternoon. I've been checking for heat in his hooves when he gets in and his weight is being managed but what else should I be checking?

Other than checking for signs of lami, keep an eye out for signs of colic. I would tend to gradually introduce horses to new grazing (eg hour first day, 2 hours the next etc.). I am a bit neurotic though as I have one lami prone pony and one colic prone pony. x

You should be checking for a digital pulse in the leg, much more helpful when it comes to laminitis :)
If you don't know how it's roughly just above the fetlock on the inside of the legs and if you can feel it that's generally not good! My vet showed me how to find it when my pony went down with laminitis, so if you see a vet don't be afraid to ask :)

they've been weaned on over a week to about eight hours and now working it up so he can stay out a bit longer.

Will talk to the Y/O about the pulse, she's bound to know :)

Thank you!
