This is a very nosey poll so please don't answer if you think it's a bit intrusive...

I'm a bit bored at work so thought I would make my first ever poll.... be kind lol!

I am just wondering how everyone affords their horse AND house, bills and life, with particular regards to your stage of life ie, single, married, living with parents, houseowners etc.
Do you sacrifice one for the other, do you have a good job that lets you pay for both, do your parents still pay or do you have an OH who pays towards it?

I'm lucky that I earn fairly decent money, not loaded by any stretch of the imagination but we get by.......mind you shopping for me has taken a nose dive, I realised last week that i have not bought myself 1 pair of winter boots this year

it used to be at least 3 pairs a year until Cropi came along, now she gets the new boots!!

im 23, moved back home for various reason, one being they had land and stabling, so keep both my two horses at home, but i work to pay for both of them, living at home saves me alot so i can also have the time to study part time

Answered poll, but couldn't be too exact as me and OH have 3 horses between us, so we both pay out for them! V lucky really that he is just as keen and therefore just as happy to pay as me!

I pay for everything myself, my parents are very anti-horses.

I work part time at the yard where I keep my horse and part time in an office which means I work stupid hours but at least I still get to spend a fair amount of time with my ponio.

Live with my parents because I don't earn enough to be able to get a mortgage to buy my own house in this area and I refuse to rent
Have 2 horses in the family, my old pony who is now my sisters, and my horse. We rent a small yard and keep the horses DIY. My parents pay the rent of the yard and for my sisters pony and hay and straw, I pay for my horses feed, shoes and any other bits he needs, tack rugs, entry fees etc. They helped me out with buying the horse as the right one came along before I had saved up enough, and I am paying them back.

A lot of people have criticised me for owning horses before I have moved out, but I couldn't afford to move out even if I had no car and no horses and no social life, whereas i have no trouble affording keeping my horse and having a nice car and a social life. Wouldn't want to live alone anyway so i'm waiting to meet a nice man

Horse is on Part livery as I have to work - DIY at the weekensd.

Where did those of you who have an OH who pays your livery find him, and was there any more where he came from?

I fall into 2 ages, so I went for 20-30 (its less scary than 30-40)

, I live with my husband in our own house with the horses at home, we go halves on all the fixed bills (mortgage, council tax etc) any surplus (haha) of his he spends on golf, shooting or blokey things and any of mine gets spent on horses. I do tend to sacrifice things so that I can compete or have lessons, and consequently havent had any new shoes/clothes in about 2 years

. I dont drink or smoke, but I reckon a 20 aday habit costs more than me keeping my horses!

I'm in the 50-60 bracket, divorced (twice!), renting and, on paper, cannot afford a horse. Technically I have one but she is very pregnant so I ticked the "2 or more" box! I loathe livery and it is very difficult to have a horse in livery if you want to breed. I share the leases on two fields with Burtie so ticked "other" of the livery section.
 
I'm 21 and still live at home, but will be moving out in the summer once I've graduated and found a job (

). My parents pay for Chex just now, but I will be paying once I move out. I keep him on DIY in winter and grass livery in summer to keep costs down. I'll either pay for him myself, or jointly between me and OH
 
Im moving back there in May. You can come visit and we'll go capture one for you.

They roam free and unsuspecting on the streets! We just need to eye up the rich ones first.

and pay for everything out of my meagre wages.

I go without a lot of stuff (including hols and nights out) for me and can be regularly seen scouring charidee shops for jeans and stuff (just got some fab River Island ones for £3.99) but I'd rather have my horse than a new wardrobe and all that other stuff

It has been very interesting and I especially admire Feufolet for holding down a full time job and working Sat's and teaching to pay for her horse, that must be tiring!

As for me:

Dating
Own a flat of my own but will be co-habiting in the next few months.... yikes!

On my salary up till now I couldn't have afforded a horse and a mortgage on my own, I had to choose and I chose to own my own flat... is almost the same cost as renting anyway and it was either that or live at home forever!

Even now I have a better job, I live in London Mon-Fri so can't really take on the commitment of a horse of my own. At the moment I have the best of both worlds anyway, I love riding April and would never give her up, not even for a horse of my own.

Have not been with my OH for that long and I think he might have a hernia in the future if I ever got my own horse hehe!
Maybe I should trade him in and take a trip to Denmark

I am 33

We own a house with some land
I have 2 horses and two ponies living here at home
Both OH and I support the horses and my mother bought one of the horses for me and paid his full service livery of $300 per month for a year when OH and I were trying to get funds together to buy house

It is far less expensive to own horses here though (or so I am told)
 
hehe. I'm 22, living with my boyfriend (rents two cottages) where we keep 2 horses with him at home and 2 shetlands and my mare on DIY at local yard. He rides the two at home and looks after the shetlands and I ride and look after the mare mainly, but we split costs for all of them.
 
LOL I imported my horse friendly OH as well, as did a friend of mine from the RC, who also has a horsey OH - maybe this is the way forward!!

I suppose you could say I am dating, its kinda complicated!
I live with my parents but also rent a place for 10 months of the year whilst at uni
we have one horse
She is on DIY
and my parents well mum pays for her
