very obese cob help!!

i have just started loaning a beautiful gelding, as his owner has just left him as a field ornament for the last 6 months, he is very chunky his hoofs need doing, I'm going to bring him back into work slowly any advice?!!:)

The usual stuff, I imagine; grazing muzzle if he's out, soaked hay instead of haylage to keep calories down, in hand walks to get his endurance and balance up and a little weight off, and then follow a fittening program? If you're at a bit of a loss, speak to your instructor or trainer, but take it slow! Any change to his activity, like in hand or hacking walks will take it off slowly. Crash diets don't work for people or ponies! Get your farrier out and have a chat with them, get a vet out for a check over and a discussion of making a plan. He'll be feeling and looking better faster than you think :)
