My horse has been "lame" for a week, however it is like no lameness I've ever seen before. He has absolutely no heat or swelling and does rest the leg more than the other, but still has no problem putting full weight on it, it is his right hind. I gave him a few days out in the field and then trotted him up, he was landing short on a circle but then after a few laps tracked up fine and looked sound. He was also sound on a straight line but started off stiff for the first couple of times. I went up the field today and found him lying down, he got up and held his leg in the air, then walked over very lame, extremely stiff and I'd started typing the vet's phone number in when he suddenly walked fine and then trotted over totally sound ! He then trotted and cantered up the field when turned out totally sound. I am thinking it could be an issue higher up than / in the leg, but have never seen anything like it! And I've dealt with a lot of lameness. Any ideas? He's fine on all other legs and has never shown anything like this before.

How old is he?

I would call the vet because to be honest, it could be anything. My very broken ISH was trotting sound on a circle and in straight lines. But every time we stopped he rested his left hind. No heat, no swelling. And he often seemed stiff to start with. He has a lumbosacral (SI region) injury and a torn suspensory ligament.

I had one previously that used to present as yours and it had stifle issues.

He's only 9, very fit and athletic type that never usually had any problems- apart from being quite accident prone ! Planned to have the vet out Monday. He went lame after a long hack with some fast work, so I guess it could have just overdone something. He stopped showing the lameness signs after about 4 days off, but he seemed worse today after lying down, then returned to normal after a stretch down the field

Possibly partially locking patella aka sticky stifle. Have had similar issues and the holding up of the hind leg is something my gelding does with his. Also the on-off lameness.
