I have been looking at finding myself a hat for inhand showing and been asked to make an offer on a very old (possibly 20 years plus) but in good condition Charles Owen beagler.

How much would you say it was worth, or I should offer?

New they are now £100 odd, but obviously a lot cheaper than that 20 years ago when first purchased.

An alternative new one, the Horka will cost me £40 to buy. Or a friend of mine said just cut the straps off an old velvet one for showing as a cheap option!

Offer £15 - £25 if very nice condition, no marks or fading.

I purchased an old velvet Sandon Saddlery hat on ebay for £15 - it was in perfect conditon and a lovely brown. It still has the original elastic strap on it (took me back 30 years) which I have kept on as it tucks up the back of the hat. It has been perfect for in hand showing.

You could also do as your friend suggests, but the beagler is more elegant.
