As the title suggests I have a really painful knee at the moment which the anti inflammatories (naproxen) and pain killers (co drydamol) which I am taking for my prolapsed disc in my back don't seem to be touching. When I bend my knee of sit down and straighten it, it really hurts with a very sharp pain. If i press gently on the area just above my knee cap it is very sore and it feels as if my knee is about to lock (it never does). I am also getting some dreadful clicking when I bend the knee. Its best when I am walking around on the knee using it. If I attempt to kneel on the floor it absolutely kills me.

Is this housemaids knee and what is the cure?? Suprisingly I suffer no pain riding or jumping my horse it is merely the action of crouching or kneeling that causes me pain that almost makes me sick. I have put voltarol on it but am unsure whether to ice or heat pack. I can't rest it as I am on DIY livery and have to drive to/from work. Any suggestions please?

I have had exactly the same! I would be concerned if the painkillers and antiinflammatories aren't helping. I would try a physio - mine is helped by having my kneecap strapped into place.
It has been alot better lately, but kneeling not good. My physio gives me very boring exercises to do which do help. You may have to get a referral from your doctor if you do not want to go privately.

Ditto doctor and physio hun.

Speak to physio about a knee brace (used a lot by skiers!).

Consider getting some Sprenger stirrup irons. I know you say you don't hurt when riding, but it might be aggravating it.

Have a hug and a hot choccy :)

I had awful pain in my knees (both of them though) I found it painful even to walk. The doc referred me to the physio and they said it was due to having flat feet which had a knock-on effect on my knees putting huge amounts of pressure on them. It is now controlled with wearing insoles and doing specific exercises.

how long has it been hurting you for? is the pain only on weight bearing or at rest too (if both is it worse one than the other?) is it one or both knees? am i right in understanding that the pain is worse if you have been not using it then begin to use it again? does this mean that the pain eases with use? is there any swelling, redness or heat? do you get pain when the knee clicks or is this a completely seperate occasion & not related to the pain? do you feel any "grinding" when you open or close the knee joint? can you remember when the pain started exactly? what were you doing when you first noticed it? when the pain first came on was it as bad as it is now or has it worsened or eased at all? when you get the pain how long does it last for? does anything relieve the pain? has the knee been unstable or "given way" at all?

unfortunately there are a lot of causes of acute knee pain, many of which are difficult to identify & treat. some people find physio helps, others dont even when they have the same diagnosis. the same can be said for special insoles. as for heat & cold, as it sounds as though the pain is worse when you are not using the knee that suggests a degree of stiffness & so the best thing is to use both. apply an ice pack for a few minutes & then a hot water bottle or similar. be careful not to have the ice directly on the skin (wrap it in a tea towel or similar) or to leave it on too long. also keep the knee mobile. keep walking around to keep the joint loose but if you start getting too much pain then just bending & flexing the knee whilst sat down will be helpful.

if the pain does not get better within a couple of days of onset then get to your gp. they may well not be able to help but they can check that there is nothing more sinister going on. as a long term knee pain sufferer i feel your pain & annoyance when nothing can be done.

hope this helps a bit!

Sorry I meant to say the pain came on after I started my new job which involved some kneeling on the floor!! :) To explain I was filing and a lot of the files were in the bottom of the filing draw.
